Paul Nitze RIP.

Post by The Duchess of Zeon »

Paul Nitze dies at 97.

One of the greatest of the defenders, the terror of the Eisenhower administration and genius lording over the strategic and defensive issues of the Cold War, one of the greatest of the unsung "insiders" who have exercised so much forgotten influence over American policy, is dead. With him passes the generation of the greatest minds of the Democratic Party, the men who rose to their positions under the strain of WWII and the tutelage of FDR's last administrations. Under Truman, and in the opposition to "the Great Golfer", they were the men who prepared us for the long struggle of the Cold War, who thought about the unthinkable and figured out how to deal with it, and who kept the budget-cutting obsessions of the Republican administrations in those days themselves in check with the reality of our defensive needs, and disproved the hysteria of McCarthyism in their own firm stances against the Communist menace. Paul Nitze was the last of them, and we are somewhat dimenished by the passing of this great man and that great generation of leaders.

You have to respect a man like that. Even if you disagree with him, you still have to respect.

Indeed. I was the same way about Reagan. Bad politics, but a good man.
