In pancreatitis one of the many unhappy events is the release of digestive enzymes outside the areas of the digestive tract that normally contain such substances. As a result your enzymes start to digest you - from the inside out. If the process can't be halted your innards can liquify. After my husband was out of danger the medical folks where I work told me their pancreatitis patient horror stories. They made it sound sort of like ebola.
Anyhow, while my Other Half certainly didn't deserve such a thing, when it comes to Ashcroft it couldn't have happend to a nicer guy. Maybe he had a severe back-up of bile and gall. Maybe the evil inside him just partied a little too hard one weekend.
