3 police wounded in Hague blast

THE HAGUE, Netherlands (AP) -- An explosion during a police raid on a house in The Hague has wounded three police officers, while Dutch authorities closed the air space over the city as part of the operation.

Authorities would not confirm whether the raid early Wednesday was connected to an investigation into possible terrorist suspects, and it was not immediately clear why air space over the city -- which has no major airports -- had been closed.

Several city blocks were cordoned off in a mostly immigrant neighborhood near The Hague's Holland Spoor train station, and police demanded identification from anyone wishing to leave.

The explosion occurred as police raided the house during an operation they said was conducted on behalf of national prosecutors. Gunshots were also heard during the raid.

Two police officers were hospitalized in serious, but not life-threatening condition, and one was treated and released with minor injuries, police spokesman Frans van Rijnswou said.

The building was surrounded by police in riot gear, fire engines, ambulances and swat teams.

Photographers on the scene showed images of a man of Asian descent being dragged from the building clad only in boxer shorts and escorted away, but police would not confirm the apparent arrest. They did confirm there were still suspects in the building.

Authorities would not say whether the raid was connected to an investigation in the alleged terrorist slaying of filmmaker Theo van Gogh on Nov. 2. Van Gogh had received death threats after the release of his most recent film about the treatment of women under Islam.

There have been more than a dozen arson attacks in the Netherlands against churches and mosques since Van Gogh's killing in Amsterdam more than a week ago.

Six suspects, believed to be members of a terrorist group, remain in custody, including the alleged killer, 26-year-old Mohammed Bouyeri, who holds dual Dutch and Moroccan nationality.

Ah crap. I just hear on the radio they also bombed a mosque this night right here in Belgium (Beringen IIRC, which is rather near to me). Stupid dickheads who done it. I don't want that shit here too

it would seem that the Dutch have quite a little culture war brewing. I heard a statistic the other day that over 50% of the population of Rotterdam was foreign born.

As a Belgian, it hurts me to say that the Dutch are one of the most openminded people there are. Thats why, of all countries, they really didnt deserved this shit

I wouldn't be surprised if at least some of the mosques/Islamic schools have been attacked by people where Muslim hoping to stir up more trouble. And I'd bet they closed down airspace over The Hague simply to keep new helicopters away. They get annoying when they turn out in force and there's also the inevitable swarm of police aircraft around.

Quite correct. It's mostly young people who are frustrated by the situation of the very conservative lifestyle of their foreign parents and the open Dutch culture they've grown up in. For some reason they stir shit.
Don't get me wrong, I live in Rotterdam, and I have a number of Moroccan and Turkish friends. But there is a general clash of cultures.

Unfortunately these Mosques/schools aren't really fundamentalist. It's extreme right-wing people who do this. The school at least was done by a bunch of white power morons.
And news helicopters aren't as abundant here as in America

I have a bad feeling that we'll be seeing this situation over and over again in the coming years. Mostly in Euprope, which is full of Muslims, but also in the US.

Same here, and probably some Sikhs and Indians will get caught in the crossfire since they're all "sand niggers" and "ragheads" to the ignorant and stupid. A gas station near where I lived got shot up just after September 11th because some local dumbass thought that its Indian owners and operators were evil Ay-rabs plotting against the good god-fearin' Americans. Fortunately nobody was hurt in that incident.

Yes, well America is proud of the fact that the swarms of stabilized camera and FLIR systems on its civilian news and police helicopters are more advanced then what 90% of the worlds air forces have available.
