Old folks and voting.

Post by Gandalf »

I've seen it remarked by a few people here and in RL that older people tend to vote for the status quo.

The most notable example for me was everyone my grandmother knew telling about how they voted against a republic back in '99 because; "If you're unsure of something, just vote against it."

Could the aging "baby boomers" generation represent a major obstacle to pushing more progressive social and possibly fiscal policies through government?
"Oh no, oh yeah, tell me how can it be so fair
That we dying younger hiding from the police man over there
Just for breathing in the air they wanna leave me in the chair
Electric shocking body rocking beat streeting me to death"

- A.B. Original, Report to the Mist

"I think it’s the duty of the comedian to find out where the line is drawn and cross it deliberately."
- George Carlin

In the case of American baby boomers, it depends on how much of their parents attitudes they digested. The WW2 generation pretty much has the attitude of 'if it causes an uproar, it's wrong'. But the baby boomers were in their 20s during the Social Revolution of the 1960s. It all comes down to which was more influential in their lives: the outside world around them or their parents' indoctrination.
