Strangely my Grandmother was more tight lipped then my grandpa about WWII. I didn't find out until her funeral, that she had been one of the AT&T operators who were sent to language and code school. And thus couldn't talk about what she did in WWII.

Both of my grandfathers were involved, although they died before I was born so I never got to ask about it. Grandfather on mum's side was part of the ground crew for one of the Scottish RAF bases, grandfather on my dad's side was a field doctor, also involved with the RAF, although I've never actually checked up on exactly what he did. There are medals, apparently, but no idea what for. Something to check up on the next time I'm home.

My family had members in just about every American war in the last century, and an astonishing 'whole and intact' survival rate given that most of them were in the infantry, naval aviation, or other dangerous professions.
The saddest casualty was the death of one of my great aunts, who had two sons in the infantry in Korea. A telegram delivery man came to her house, and she thought he was bringing her a death notice for one of her sons. She locked the door and wouldn't answer it, and within a couple of hours keeled over from a stroke.
Both sons came back in one piece. I never heard what the telegram was actually about, but the story drives home the whole 'they also serve' line in a very stark fashion.
