A woman who was eight months pregnant had the baby snatched from her womb after kidnappers drugged her and performed a rudimentary caesarean section, the woman told Colombian television today.

Sol Angela Cartagena told RCN television she was drugged at a hospital in Girardot in Cundinamarca province and carried by a woman to a remote place on a hillside where the caesarean was performed and her infant abducted.

Cartagena said she arrived at the hospital with her two-year-old daughter for a pregnancy checkup and drank a glass of water she had left unattended for a few minutes.

Immediately after drinking the water, she began to feel ill, she said.

"I felt I was falling asleep, and when I woke up, I was on the hill with my two-year-old daughter by my side," she said.

"I felt as if they had thrown hot water on me, and then I saw a stream of boiling blood," Cartagena said. "My little girl began to scream and call me. Then she told me the woman had wrapped the baby in a sheet and had left quite calmly."

Physicians at the hospital confirmed Cartagena's story.

"The patient arrived bleeding, and after checking her, we were able to verify that she was operated on to remove the baby and placenta," said gynaecologist Carlos Cespedes.

"It was the strangest thing I have seen in my career, and I think she was very lucky to arrive at the hospital alive," he said.

Authorities were investigating the case.

every time I think I've heard the worst of what humans can do to one another, something like this happens.

Anyone have any ideas, any at all, as to possible motives of such an act?

First thing that comes to mind: it has something to do with religious fanaticism.

Erm... I can't think of any religion that involves snatching babies from the womb.

Stuff it full of drugs and pass it over the US border. Yes, that is a common tactic with the Latin American drug dealers.

But would they make it work with a 8 month baby, though? And why go through the trouble, when they can easily steal an infant?

We had a case somewhat akin to this a few years ago in Chicago. Except the woman didn't survive - they simply cut her open with a big knife, took the baby, and left her to bleed to death.

In that case, it was a combination of baby stealing by a realtive of the father as well as some race-hatred motivations. The murdering thieves also butchered the woman's older son, who was not of the same ethinic group as the killers.

It's when preachers claim that if infertile couples give them lots of money and go to some third world country to get "prayed over" a whole lot, they'll suddenly have "miracle births." Basically some poor woman gets her baby bought/stolen and they sneak the kid in while the infertile woman is going crazy with prayer and go "VOILA! God has given you a child!"

On topic: in the past when people talked about atrocities the worst thing that could happen in many people's minds was pregnant women being cut open and having their babies pulled out. The people who did this were nothing but barbarians.

BOGOTA, Colombia (AP) -- Police said Tuesday they have arrested a woman in the abduction of an unborn baby who was cut from its mother's womb while she was unconscious.

Sol Angela Cartagena said she was with her 2-year-old daughter when she had a drink at a hospital cafeteria in Girardot, southwest of Bogota, and suddenly felt lightheaded.

"When I woke up I was in the countryside with my 2-year-old daughter beside me," the woman told RCN TV, adding that someone had performed a Caesarean section on her and taken her baby.

Carlos Cespedes, a gynecologist, confirmed that someone had removed Cartagena's baby. Apparently Cartagena had been drugged, causing her to black out before the operation. It was unclear where it was performed, but authorities said Cartagena was lucky to be alive.

"This is the strangest thing I've seen in my professional career, and I believe this patient had all the luck in the world in not dying before getting to the hospital," he said.

Police officer Gustavo Silva said the woman who allegedly stole the baby was found due to tips and that prosecutors are now handling the case. People who had seen the unidentified woman with a baby wrapped in a sheet called authorities because they knew she had not been pregnant and they did not know where the baby had come from.

The baby was dehydrated but otherwise reported in good condition.

No other details on the case were available.

Colombia has the world's highest kidnapping rate, with more than 3,000 abductions a year, but authorities said they knew of no other case here where an unborn child was abducted.
