Living till you're 1000?

I think you're on to something here. I'd be willing to that that the rate of progress (social, scientific, etc) is inversely proportional to our lifespan. Everything would slow down if we started living to 1000.

There would be economic turmoil as well. Imagine companies having to pay out pensions for over 900 years. Of course the age of retirement would have to be raised, but all the people currently retired would continue to draw benefits for a loooong time. I think you would see that the concentration of wealth would increase and property values would skyrocket.

Hmmm, I wonder if a 1000 year life sentence would be considered cruel and unusual punishment?

But, if the process doesn't change the way the human body ages, or some really strong aphrodisiac isn't developed, you'd probably spend over 90% of life being impotent. Could you imagine how hard it would be to get hard at 950?

I don't think that our rate of progress is inversely proportional to our life span. After all, we've discovered more about the world and science in the last 50 years than in the entire 5000 years before that and our lifespans have increased substantially.

With lifespans of that length, your Sargeant could have easily started his military career with Henry V's Agincourt campaign.

Would this have any effect on militaries? Perhaps more troops? Then again, that far ahead into the future we would probably be less dependant on humans for the battlefield.
