It's a popular misconception that circumstantial evidence isn't as good as direct evidence. For example, matching a suspect's fingerprints to those found at the scene of a break-in, or matching a suspect's DNA to semen found on a rape victim are both forms of circumstantial evidence, but I don't think many people would dismiss those as not being "hard evidence."
