Pardoned. And you know who I'm talking about. At the opposite end of the ideological spectrum from the people who think that everyone who owns a gun is a cammo-wearing psychopath, there are the folk who think that anybody who wants to pass any form of legislation relating to firearms has a 'secret agenda' for confiscating their guns. Both extremes make it hard to have a rational discussion on the issues. So pardon me if you find my rhetoric overblown. We wouldn't want to grossly mischaracterize anyone by calling them 'paranoid tinfoil hat wearers', would we?
Interesting analysis of the 2004 elections

Mrs. Spade didn't raise any children dippy enough to
make guesses in front of a district attorney,
an assistant district attorney, and a stenographer.

The NRA pushed instant check legislation for years, only to have it stymied by the fact that the Brady Bunch would settle for nothing less than waiting period+background check. As a consequence nothing got done on the issue until the Brady Bill was rammed through congress by Democratic majorities, fortunately including sunset provisions that stripped away the waiting periods for most states.
The aforementioned 'cop killer bullet' bullshit was aimed at outlawing a wide spectrum of ammunition. It was attempted again with overblown reporting on the 'fearsome' Black Talon JHP ammunition in the mid-nineties, but by that point gun control was already a declining issue.
I'll always treasure the memory of that dumbass newsbimbo... think it was Forest Sawyer... holding up an expanded round and explaining with grave urgency that the sharpened tines 'hooked the flesh'.
Reasonable discussion can be had on the issue, certainly. But the leading proponents of gun control as embraced by the Democratic party have not behaved in a reasonable fashion. They've operated time and again on the 'Take the inch and grab for a mile' methodology.
This is what brings it back to the point of this whole topic. They have not supported their stance by means of reason and evidence, instead choosing mendacious means of advocating their agenda. At which point you say 'Why reason with the bastards?' There's no point in dealing with liars.
