Lasers? And Planes? In Australia?
Been hearing reports on the radio this morning about a police starting investigations of a series of "incidents" involving planes being "targetted" by green lasers around Maroochydore airport...
Anyone else been hearing about this?
And who thinks that the perpetrator will end up being some 12 y/o kid on summer holidays with too much time on his hands?

It'll be a punk kid. I remember when I was abroad years ago and the red laser pens were coming out everywhere and I, being a typical gadget freak of a kid, got one too. I did notice that many kids played merry hell with people using these beams, and now the green/blue lasers are cheaper than they once were and far more powerful, it was only a matter of time.
Although exceedingly hard to do, putting a pilot or even just a driver off with a laser pointer is a real crime and I hope they find the perps and haul them off for a good re-education session.

Adults can be dumbasses too. And that's funny you said summer, it's winter silly.weemadando wrote:And who thinks that the perpetrator will end up being some 12 y/o kid on summer holidays with too much time on his hands?
The most basic assumption about the world is that it does not contradict itself.

Not at the bottom off the Earth it isn't. Down there, it's summer and gravity is reversed and hamburgers eat people. It's truly a wacky place to live.Wicked Pilot wrote: Adults can be dumbasses too. And that's funny you said summer, it's winter silly.
I'm quite sure WP knows that and was poking Anders in the eye like a real red-blooded American should.

There's been something like a dozen incidents with morons in the States aiming lasers at planes. All of them have happened since the announcement that terrorists might try to blind airline pilots with planes. Of course.
I do wonder what's going through these peoples' heads. Are they hoping to actually blind a pilot? Then what? Do they actually want a plane crash on their conscience (not to mention about a thousand years in prison), or are they just stupid?

Any city gets what it admires, will pay for, and, ultimately, deserves…We want and deserve tin-can architecture in a tinhorn culture. And we will probably be judged not by the monuments we build but by those we have destroyed.--Ada Louise Huxtable, "Farewell to Penn Station", New York Times editorial, 30 October 1963

Why do people throw bricks through windows, drop rocks off overpasses, etc? Maybe they want to be able to tell their bar buddies that they made a 747 have to change course. They must be big men to accomplish such a feat. And of course some people are just stupid.RedImperator wrote:I do wonder what's going through these peoples' heads. It's the terrorists. Honest! Doc Evil wants to extort one million dollars from us, or he'll annoy some airline pilots.Nieztchean Uber-Amoeba wrote:Why you swindling sons of bitches! You told us that your defense budget had been cut, and now you show up with advancedlaser weaponry? You Aussies are all the same!
