Term Limits, not just for America anymore?
So my other Anglo friends, what do you say about EMPEROR BLAIR and
EMPEROR HOWARD's continued reign of terror over the UK and Australia?
Should Term limits be instituted in those countries so that you don't have
to deal with assholes for more than 8 years?

Political backstabbing usually imposes some form of term limitations over here.
After all, HRH Blair has to watch himself every day, since his next-door neighbour is after his job.
Even HRH Thatcher was taken down from within eventually.
Remember that the PM is only the PM as long as his party likes him, and can be challenged from within at any point in the party's term.

Probably not posible without a consitutional ammendment. Which arent very popular here in Australia, and how the consitution is setup almost imposible to achieve.MKSheppard wrote:So my other Anglo friends, what do you say about EMPEROR BLAIR and

75% of the population and then 100% of the states(IIRC A state votes yes with 75% of it population voting yes) need to vote yes. You can guess how hard that is to achieve.

I'm personally not that bothered. I'd personally rather have Blair for another 4 years than Kennedy or the vampire.MKSheppard wrote: Should Term limits be instituted in those countries so that you don't have

I was under the impression that the British kept electing Blair not because he was well liked and popular but because he was literally the only choice, in which case term limits would be a bad thing.

Nah, I prefer not having term limits. That way, we could avoid decent prime minister least worst of really bad prime ministers travesties for as long as possible (and hopefully avoid voting a Bush equivalent into office).

If our PM can be in his 4th term of office, the public must either like him or there is no good opposition.
No need for an amendment.

Re: Term Limits, not just for America anymore?
No, it's a majority of the population in a majority of states (so at least 4 of 6 states must have a majority), plus a majority over all, so it's not that impossible, but constitutioal amendments generally don't go through unless they have the backing of the PM, since the PM has complete creative control over the wording of the poll. And since very few (if any) politicians would amend the constitution so that their time in office (and their superannuation) would be reduced, I doubt it would go through.ggs wrote:Probably not posible without a consitutional ammendment. View the republic referendum - Howard did't want a republic, and as a result, he chose a republican model that few people would support, he added the preamble question to the repubic question, and since his preamble inculded God, that made some erstwhile republicans go against the republic because of that... had he wanted the republic, the question would have been a simple "do you want Australia to be a republic", but his convoluted approach to the subject meant that support for the republic was diminished.
And as to Howard's continued reign? Well, I voted for him. He's doing a good job, so I'm happy for him to continue until he dies, comes back from the dead and then gets un-undeadified (unless someone better comes along, that is).

Actually it is even worse. Roughly 3/4 of the population may vote, 2/3 of that number actually do, and around half have voted for Bush.
So we get that around a quarter of the population have voted for Bush.
But then it was more meant as an snark then anything else.
Eventhou voting is just the minimum you can do.
