Anyone seen "The War Tapes"?

Post by Darth Wong »

It's a film festival documentary which basically consists of footage shot by some national guardsmen during their deployment in Iraq. It's very candid, and quite fascinating IMO.

There wasn't a lot of combat (only one combat sequence, and you couldn't even tell what they were shooting at). But there were plenty of explosions in the distance. At one point they go wandering through the equipment graveyard at Camp Anaconda. Not a lot of shooting, but a whole shitload of IEDs.

What's most interesting is their politics. There's one Lebanese guy who's often at odds with the other guys in terms of politics, but he's not very open about it. There's another self-described super-patriot. There's a third guy who's somewhere in the middle. And what's most interesting is that they're so cynical about KBR and Dick Cheney, the war profiteering, and the chances of this thing ending well, but they still seem to support the mission. And the Lebanese guy? He signed up to go back.

Anyway, it's quite an interesting film, and I recommend it.

I have not seen it, but thanks for pointing it out, I'll have to catch it somehow. Anyway,it doesn't really surprise me much. All sorts of people from all walks of life join. You can stereotype it and say mostly redneck, hillbilly, poor kentucky republicans join, but there are in truth dashes of all walks of America.

That and the age old conterdiction of soldiers, who want to do their duty and still just want to go home.
They say, "the tree of liberty must be watered with the blood of tyrants and patriots." I suppose it never occurred to them that they are the tyrants, not the patriots. Those weapons are not being used to fight some kind of tyranny; they are bringing them to an event where people are getting together to talk. -Mike Wong

But as far as board culture in general, I do think that young male overaggression is a contributing factor to the general atmosphere of hostility. It's not SOS and the Mess throwing hand grenades all over the forum- Red

I caught it last month at the local "indy" theater. I was very impressed.

They provided a very personal look at what the guys are going through over there.

I was particularly disgusted by the parts about the contractors doing "business" *cough* exploiting *cough* in Iraq.
You are an intelligent human being. Your life is valuable for its own sake. You are not second-class in the universe, deriving meaning and purpose from some other mind. You are not inherently evil—you are inherently human, possessing the positive rational potential to help make this a world of morality, peace and joy. Trust yourself. –Dan Barker

Yeah, the bit with the guy talking about how contractors get $40 per plate (not per soldier, per serve or meal) but PER PLATE is just one of the bits that stuck in my mind.
