Hillary pwned in Debate? So says Fox

Post by Stravo »

Now, I was at the Halloween Parade in the Village on Wednesday night so I missed this but my dad has been crowing about how Hillary was crushed in a debate by her fellow democrats that night in particular by Obama and there have been references on Fox last night about Hillary "regrouping" and debates on what she needs to do to recover after an abysmal showing at the debate.

I am not a Hillary fan and despise her to the core but I find it hard to believe that someone as smart and saavy as she has been could get mauled like that in a debate. I have not seen any footage, etc, and my source so far is my right wing Hillary hating dad and Fox News which tend to be one and the same in terms of veracity. Can someone enlighten me if you did see it or have an opinion on her performance?

The only thing I heard Strav, and this was on the radio coming home from work last night, was that she took a couple positions (drivers licences for illegals IIRC) and the other candidates kept coming back to it, just hammering her.

The implication I got, was that she wasn't softballed like her apperances on Opera and the like, and so the others took to oppertunity to smack her around a bit.

You have to admit it would do something for the viewer ratings on political debates.

Obama, and Edwards much more in my opinion, savaged her with attacks and accusations about her lack of clarity and whoring out to right-wingers and taking more money than even Republicans.

She and Giuliani have already been crowned by the media as the official front runners with an entire year still to go. The other candidates are going to concentrate fire on her, just like Giuliani is beginning to draw barbs from all over the field.

(Incidentally, the Joe Biden v. Giuliani fight is hilarious and does a great job of highlighting how much of a crazy asshole Giuliani, just one of the reasons he shouldn't be prez.)

The bit I saw regarding the illegals getting drivers licenses seemed more like an answer requiring nuance and depth being totally out of place in the shitty sound-byte driven "debates".

Unfortunately, political debates are always like this, in any country. Politicians have an array of "talking points" they want to use, and they have a simple algorithm they use whenever they answer a question.

Step 1: Does this question contain any words or phrases that are similar to one of my talking points?

Step 2: If yes, then simply state the talking point. It won't really answer the question, but it will sound sort of like an answer.

Step 3: If no, then try to find a way to gracefully segue into a preferred talking point.

Step 4: If you cannot gracefully segue into the talking point, simply say "that is a very interesting question, and it reminds me of ..." your talking point.

At no point do you actually answer the question or address the point.

She didn't come out looking particularly great, but I can't say she was "crushed" because almost nothing of substance happened.

Joe Biden did raise some interesting points, particularly relating to how beating the war drum on Iran could destabilize Pakistan: "Would we really go to war to keep Iran from having a few kilograms of nuclear material if it meant losing Pakistan, which already has hundreds of nuclear weapons capable of hitting Israel and India, to the fundamentalists?"

I watched pretty much the entire debate, and I don't really see why people are crowing about Obama stomping her. He did raise a strong point about her not releasing the records of her conversations with Bill Clinton while he was in office, but he was far less on the attack than John Edwards was. Edwards basically hit her directly and hard on both the Iran Resolution she voted for that designated Hezbollah a terrorist organization, and then near the end, when the issue of the "drivers licenses to illegal aliens" came up, said that she had said "two things in about two minutes."

On the whole, Edwards was far more prominent an attacker than Hillary.

Joe Biden was definitely the most interesting to listen; the guy knows his stuff on foreign policy. I also loved the quip he made about Giuliani, that he has three things in a sentence: a noun, a verb, and 9/11.

No Dean was the "Dark Horse" who we all knew wasn't going to win but was there to be the "other" candidate for those who don't want to vote for the already crowned front runner. I can't decide yet whether Obama or Edwards is this election's Dean.

Dean actually was considered the Democratic frontrunner going into the Iowa Caucus; he had raised more money than any other democrat seeking the nomination (in fact, Kerry's campaign a few weeks earlier had almost entirely run out of funds; Kerry had to lend his own money to his campaign) going into the Primaries. It was really quite a surprise that Dean did so poorly in Iowa - and he didn't help by giving the "scream speech", which was then all over the news.

Oh man, that's awesome. I wish I'd seen that. :D

Biden's a pretty good senator, and I'll be voting him into yet another term next year, but he says things sometimes that are just not very politically savvy. He does know his foreign policy, though, and I'm hoping he'll get a Secretary of State position or something. Four years of Joe Biden speeches would be pretty entertaining.
Should any political party attempt to abolish social security, unemployment insurance, and eliminate labor laws and farm programs, you would not hear of that party again in our political history. There is a tiny splinter group, of course, that believes you can do these things... their number is negligible and they are stupid. --Dwight D. Eisenhower

I can't seem to pick good runners for office. I voted for Gore, he lost; he's not running anymore. I voted for Kerry, he lost; he's not running anymore. I don't see anyone I'd vote for this time around.

I mean, these people are just cardboard. And one thinks he saw a UFO. At this point, I'd vote for Obama because I like Obama Girl's tits.
