LAUDERHILL, Fla. - Authorities in Lauderhill said a 12-year-old autistic boy was stabbed in both eyes by a family member on Friday.

Police said his aunt stabbed him at about 1 a.m. Friday but authorities were not notified until 10 hours later. The cause of the attack and the reason for the delay to contact authorities are not yet known.

Police said the aunt also injured her own eye.

She and the boy were being treated at Jackson Memorial Hospital. Their conditions were not known.

I know I'm kind of over doing it with the news stories but this shit is hard to believe.

Because families try to cover things up as much as possible? Especially with something like this, where the aunt will probably (hopefully!) be locked up/in treatment for a very long time, notifying the authorities makes serious repercussions inevitable. Much better to do anything possible to avoid that. Idiots.

Also, since this happened in the middle of the night, an even worse possibility is that for one reason or another, no-one else found out until the morning.

What the holy hell is going on with that state? Is there toxic waste in the water or something??? I simply can't believe the amount of idiocy that is regularly reported from that state.

It has to do with how downright transient it is down there. You have nutjobs from all over the country there. Plus, I think the heat and humidity gets to people. Overall, some fucked up shit goes down in FL.

Actually, that's an excellent point. That must factor into a great deal of it. Places with lasting, lengthy social bonds tend to moderate nuttiness. Florida is particularly bad as a nesting ground for Canadian 'snowbirds', as well as their own countrymen frequenting it as a vacation state.

LAUDERHILL, Fla. — A woman stabbed her 12-year-old autistic nephew in both eyes with a military-style dagger, likely leaving him permanently blind, police said.

The woman then stabbed herself in one eye after attacking the boy on Friday, police said.

Relatives, for unclear reasons, waited more than 10 hours before calling 911, police said. No charges have been filed and no names have been released.

The woman gave no reason for the stabbing and the boy is mute, police said.

"The preliminary prognosis is that the child is going to be blind," said Lt. Rick Rocco, spokesman for the Lauderhill Police Department.

The boy lives with his grandmother in the South Florida community.

"She adored that child," neighbor Peggy Burrows said. "Sometimes the boy would be running around the lawn in his underwear, but we rarely saw him. They keep mostly to themselves."

Neighbor Joanne Kull said the aunt "looked very angry" as police pulled her away.
