The media treats him as a "moderate", a "maverick" and parrots his "straight-talker" persona. Why? He has an extremely conservative voting record (17th most reactionary in the Senate) and has misrepresented himself/blatantly lied about the issues as a point of his political career. He has relied on the media sheep to save his career in the past (the Keating Five scandal) and still uses them to spread this false identity of John McCain as a moderate. He is, if anything, a neo-conservative just like Bush.
Yes, but he's a war hero. That's why everyone is inclined to like him. Your country worships the military, and he's a throwback to the past, when one needed military experience to be a credible leader.
That's just it though; the Right, which tends to suck the cock of the military far more than centrists or progressives, are the ones demonizing McCain. He seems like a perfect Republican candidate, and yet, Republicans hate him.
That's funny, because I could have sworn that John McCain won two states' Republican primaries, including one in a hardline Bible-belt state.
Should any political party attempt to abolish social security, unemployment insurance, and eliminate labor laws and farm programs, you would not hear of that party again in our political history. There is a tiny splinter group, of course, that believes you can do these things... their number is negligible and they are stupid. --Dwight D. Eisenhower

Because of INDEPENDENTS who were allowed to vote in Open Primaries. The exit polls demonstrate that McCain would have LOST to Romney in both states if the primaries in NH and SC were closed to non-Republicans. McCain got FEWER votes than Romney from those who self-identified themselves as Conservative or Very Conservative. McCain ultimately won NH and SC because of Independents voting in Republican primaries.

Nonsense. Both the left and right constantly suck military cock. Military worship and flag worship in your country is at an absolutely ridiculous level, from all corners of society. The only difference between the Republicans and Democrats on this matter is that the Republicans worship not just soldiers, but war itself.

We worship the idea of the soldier, but at the end of the day don't seem to give a flying fuck about them or their families. What is it some people call it, the cult of the soldier?

The Military itself is pretty much what drives our economy at this point.

It wasn't this bad during the height of the Vietnam War, when I grew up. This shit started ramping up back in the 80s when the chickenhawks gained power under Reagan and it has now gotten decidedly unhealthy in what is supposed to be a constitutional, democratic republic.

Ghetto Edit:

Regardless of who wanks to the military more, the hatred many conservatives have for McCain makes little sense to me. They like war? So does he. He's not at all the "maverick, moderate, cross-bencher" the media makes him out to be.

Overtly, it's because McCain made the mistake of not righteously dying for his country instead of enduring five years in a box in Hanoi. Covertly, it's because none of them could have endured five years in a box in Hanoi and chickenhawks don't like to be reminded of that dirty little fact.

I do believe it was Reagan who first started saluting military personnel as President. He never served in the military. Former Supreme Allied Commander in Europe, and retired General of the Army Dwigt D. Eisenhower did not salute military personnel when he was President.

Fact Check:

Reagan was in the Army.

Well fancy that.

Still, doesn't change the fact that the President is a civilian, and I think it does not suit the one holding the office to prance around like a General.

It was just more of a nitpick.
