None of this surprises me. The American populace is highly amenable to this kind of bullshit, and I will believe they've grown up when I see it.

You make it sound as if people living inside America are not affected by Bush's "Freedom Agenda".

Every election, I hear people saying that Americans are tired of negative campaigning. And every election, I see that negative campaigning works like a charm. I will believe in America's negative campaign fatigue when I see it.

too true, but I think alot of that comes from the candidates themselves saying that they are going to be above the negative campaigning, which later of course they turn to.

Sadly, I doubt there will ever be a time when the "negative campaigning" does not play a large role in any election.

It's started coming in from the ether of news talk that this election is no longer a competition between two men, but a referendum on Obama. If evolution has a flaw, creationism wins!

And the media embraces this. I don't know who I hate more, the stupid talking heads who say this or the majority of Americans who were actually swayed by it in 2004, and will be convinced again.

Watching this farce from the outside, I already feel secure in the knowledge that McCain will win it purely with throwing lots of dirt around. Of course becoming the president in the midst of the most serious economic crisis in the last 30 years won't be a wonderful job.

Concerning american politics, I've accepted that the worst case becomes real 90% of all cases.

Are you surprised? Did 2004 or 2000 really look at Bush, or was it dominated by 'Al Gore is pedantic dipshit intellectual whose boring as hell.', and 'Kerry is an insult to all veterans everywhere ever.'?

Years ago, American politics discovered that it is far, far easier to get people to "vote against that guy" than it was to convince them to "vote for me".
Something about Libertarianism always bothered me. Then one day, I realized what it was:
Libertarian philosophy can be boiled down to the phrase, "Work Will Make You Free."

In Libertarianism, there is no Government, so the Bosses are free to exploit the Workers.
In Communism, there is no Government, so the Workers are free to exploit the Bosses.
So in Libertarianism, man exploits man, but in Communism, its the other way around!

Maybe rural and suburban dwellers watch more TV? In the city you have decadent stuff like the theatre, art museums, and such, and the media is likely going to pander to whichever demographic they think will give them the most money.
I wonder how many people in the rural areas have read a book? Those statistics would be interesting

You mean... there's another book besides the Bible? When was this allowed to happen?

I think most Americans are tired of negative campaigning, it's just that the 20% or so people who are still swayed by it happen to be the people who sit in the middle and can't think for themselves without adds.
