To be fair, these people were confused, ignorant, and a proportion of them were illiterate. For them it probably amounted to the firm belief that if the Yankees won, Northerners with funny accents were going to come into their tarpaper shacks and force their daughters into interracial marriages.

But yeah, this article basically says that, McCain has lost his conception of how normal people live, but it's okay because that's normal for a very wealthy person. The sad thing is that I think a lot of people might admire him more, due to the self-hatred that made "Lifestyles" so popular in the first place during the 1980's. In a sensible world everyone should look on the Nouveau Riche poseurs from that show with contempt, just like they should be writing off John McCain as a fake, but Lifestyles ran for 11 years and McCain supposedly has a serious shot at being elected presidents on the Maverick Everyman ticker.

Part of what keeps the masses voting for the out-of-touch arrogant wealthy is that they've been told, over and over, they if they just work hard enough/invest properly/own property or stock/play the game right, they too can become just as filthy rich.

Of course, not everyone can become a winner. In fact, it's pretty much guaranteed that 90% or more will never be that level of wealthy, ever.

No, still just a senile old duffer.
eh they already do that, I think they would want a new angle, but hey who knows since the general public falls for the same old mudslinging every time anyway.

The comment was not a gaffe; it was a pretty fair indicator of McCain's level of isolation from reality, thanks to his vast wealth and cadres of personal servants. A gaffe would be someone misspeaking or being quoted out of context in order to give a completely unfair impression of him.

As to the question of how relevant it is to his ability to be president, I'd say it's far more relevant than most of the mud they've slung at Obama. It indicates McCain's profound ignorance of the difficulties of everyday life for most people. That's a bad enough trait already, but when you combine it with a person who has already stated up-front that he intends to continue Bush's "fuck the poor and middle class" economic policies, it's downright disturbing.

A quite fitting ad on McCain and the economy.. Didn't think it needed it's own thread.
