The American Family Association has its panties in a bunch over speculation that the European Union might try to pass a UN declaration that opposes laws throwing gay people in prison.
Can you believe that? I mean, it's outrageous! That damn "activist homosexual agenda." Those gay people actually think that they shouldn't be arrested and imprisoned merely for being gay. Who do they think they are, human beings with equal rights or something? Now here's the important part of the article:A push will be under way soon at the United Nations to advance the activist homosexual agenda.
France is currently president of the European Union, and Austin Ruse of Catholic Family and Human Rights Institute (C-FAM) believes they will try to give the pro-homosexual movement some clout. "In their role as the president of the European Union for the next six months, France has announced that they are going to push for a political declaration in the General Assembly, calling for the decriminalization of sodomy," Ruse explains.
Notice that the AFA is objecting to a non-binding declaration supporting the right of gays and lesbians not to be made into criminals, on the grounds that it will be used by "radicals" to overturn laws that do make them into criminals. Do you need any more evidence that they really do think gays and lesbians should be thrown in prison? Yes, these people really ARE that extreme.Ruse stresses that the proclamation will not be a treaty forcing other countries to comply and will not be subject to the General Assembly for a vote. He says it will not be legally binding, but it likely would have an impact anyway. "It will be used by lawyers around the world to say that there's a new international standard coming out of the U.N. General Assembly, and all of that will be a lie," Ruse contends. "It won't be an action of the General Assembly, but it will be gussied up as if it is something from the General Assembly -- and radicals on the ground will use it in their own court cases."
They leave out one tiny little fact: virtually the only nations that actually enforce anti-sodomy laws are nations run by Islamic reactionaries based on Sharia law, like Iran and Saudi Arabia. You know, the very same nations who give support to the very terrorists we are fighting against around the world. The ones they constantly rant about as being evil - except, of course, when they agree with them, as they do here. And they wonder why we sometimes call them the American Taliban. Some 90 countries have laws that ban sodomy, and could eventually feel the brunt of the U.N. action.

Wait, what? Sodomy is criminalized in France? One of the most promiscuous countries in the fucking world?

They're pushing for decriminalization of soddomy in the entire EU. I can believe its still on the books in some regions of eastern europe, they were pretty tough on that sort of thing in the Soviet Union.General Zod wrote:France is currently president of the European Union, and Austin Ruse of Catholic Family and Human Rights Institute (C-FAM) believes they will try to give the pro-homosexual movement some clout. That makes more sense. I wasn't really sure about what they were trying to say, though that could be due to not being awake yet. For some reason it sounded like they were just trying to decriminalize it in France.Darth Wong wrote: No, but France wants to push for decriminalizing sodomy across the entire globe.

I am as certain as it's possible to be without having a source sitting in front of me that no EU country criminalises homosexuality or sodomy. It would be one of the conditions for being allowed EU entry.CaptainChewbacca wrote:They're pushing for decriminalization of soddomy in the entire EU. This isn't to say that no EU countries have homophobic governments/politicians (*cough* Poland), but certainly no criminal sanctions.

Yeah, I figured 'general assembly' was some EU body, but I guess its the UN, as Mike said.Teebs wrote:I am as certain as it's possible to be without having a source sitting in front of me that no EU country criminalises homosexuality or sodomy. The fact that you can believe it doesn't mean its true. In fact, Eastern Europe has had pretty much the same development of sodomy laws as the rest of Europe - mostly decriminalized in the '60ies, '70ies with some stragglers in the '90ies. And yes, a relatively comprehensive basic gay rights protection (no discrimination, legalized, but no requirement on recognition of unions or marriage, adoption) is required for EU entry. It should also be noted that, unlike the US, in Europe, including Eastern Europe, gays can serve openly in the armed forces - except Serbia, Greece, Belarus and Cyprus.CaptainChewbacca wrote:They're pushing for decriminalization of soddomy in the entire EU. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LGBT_rights_in_Europe has a nice chart showing the various key points in specific countries.
Also it's possible (while I don't know the specifics of whether that's actually the case) that some European countries have anti-sodomy laws which go unenforced, or that don't apply to homosexual relationships (in Israel for example, while there is a crime called "sodomy" it only applies to nonconsensual sex or statuatory rape)CaptainChewbacca wrote:They're pushing for decriminalization of soddomy in the entire EU. I would be very surprised, the EU has all sorts of human rights legislation you have to sign up to which would almost certainly cover that. I checked on wikipedia (not the best source ever, but it matches what I thought was the case) and almost all of the Western European countries have either civil partnerships or full gay marriage along with a couple of Eastern European ones and not one country in Europe actually bans homosexuality.eyl wrote:Also it's possible (while I don't know the specifics of whether that's actually the case) that some European countries have anti-sodomy laws which go unenforced, or that don't apply to homosexual relationships (in Israel for example, while there is a crime called "sodomy" it only applies to nonconsensual sex or statuatory rape)

The word "sodomy" has different meanings, depending on the culture you're from. Its original meaning derives from the biblical "sin of Sodom", and it was used predominantly to describe any "perverse" sexual act.eyl wrote:Also it's possible (while I don't know the specifics of whether that's actually the case) that some European countries have anti-sodomy laws which go unenforced, or that don't apply to homosexual relationships (in Israel for example, while there is a crime called "sodomy" it only applies to nonconsensual sex or statuatory rape)
In a non-religious context, I think we should talk about anal sex, not sodomy, which has the connotation of sinfulness. Anal sex is the sweet (and a little kinky) act of love, and I think saying that a state throws adults into prison for making love in a way not approved by bible captures much better what is really happening.

I just found this: http://www.sodomy.org/laws/michigan/
15 years in prison for having consensual (anal) sex? How sick is that?
Anyway, why are they making such a fuss? I thought these laws had all been invalidated by Lawrence v. Texas. Or are those that do not make a difference between homosexual and heterosexual intercourse still valid?

Unless the ruling was handed down by the Supreme Court, the other states are still free to enforce their particular brands of bigotry as far as sex goes. It's why gay marriage is still illegal in other states even though it's lawful in California. It's stupid, but there's unfortunately not much you can do about it.GySgt. It's always good to see that in relation. I'm not familiar with legal terminology, but "aggravated injury" sounds kind of bad.

This one is clearer, and for cuttin off a limb you still get a maximum sentence 5 years less than for consensual sex.750.81a Assault; infliction of serious or aggravated injury; "dating relationship" defined.
Sec. 81a.
(1) Except as otherwise provided in this section, a person who assaults an individual without a weapon and inflicts serious or aggravated injury upon that individual without intending to commit murder or to inflict great bodily harm less than murder is guilty of a misdemeanor punishable by imprisonment for not more than 1 year or a fine of not more than $1,000.00, or both.

750.86 Assault with intent to maim.
Sec. 86.
Assault with intent to maim: ”Any person who shall assault another with intent to maim or disfigure his person by cutting out or maiming the tongue, putting out or destroying an eye, cutting or tearing off an ear, cutting or slitting or mutilating the nose or lips or cutting off or disabling a limb, organ or member, shall be guilty of a felony, punishable by imprisonment in the state prison not more than 10 years or by fine of not more than 5,000 dollars.

Ha! Under Michigan law, it is still illegal for a man and woman to cohabitate out of wedlock. I wonder how many of us would technically be felons under Michigan law for past or current sexual acts.

We still have a fuckface president in office, but he'll be out pretty soon, too
And yeah, criminal sanctions for "being gay" would mean we wouldn't have been let into the EU.
And fun fact: Poland didn't have criminal laws banning homosexuality since the period between 1852-1932, when foreign criminal codes were in effect in the country. Of course, during socialist rule, the militsia often persecuted homosexuals under laws covering public decency - this just shows our leaders were often more progressive than most of society. Stating the obvious here, I guess
