McCain camp seeks investigation over reported e-mail hack
Posted: 07:30 PM ET
From CNN's Alexander Mooney, CNN's Carol Cratty, CNN's Kevin Bohn
Palin's personal e-mail was reportedly hacked Wednesday.
(CNN) — John McCain's campaign said Wednesday it has contacted "appropriate authorities" over a report that Republican VP candidate Sarah Palin's personal e-mail had been hacked.
"This is a shocking invasion of the Governor's privacy and a violation of law," campaign manager Rick Davis said in a statement. "The matter has been turned over to the appropriate authorities and we hope that anyone in possession of these emails will destroy them. We will have no further comment."
The statement came hours after a user on the Web site WikiLeaks said he had gained access to Palin's Yahoo e-mail account and gained access. Screenshots of the e-mail messages and photos of the Alaska governor's family were published on that Web site and later on gossip Web site gawker.com.
FBI Spokesman Eric Gonzalez in Anchorage, Alaska confirms to CNN an investigation is underway.
"We are aware of the allegations and we are coordinating with Secret Service as far as the allegation that someone has hacked into Governor Palin's personal e-mail account," he said. "We are going to be working a joint investigation with Secret Service on this."
Brian Hale, an FBI spokesman in Washington, also confirms the FBI has been contacted about the incident. Two federal law enforcement sources say the FBI and Secret Service would have concurrent jurisdiction normally on a matter such as this, but it remains to be seen if the Secret Service will take the lead on the investigation because Palin is a protectee.
The e-mails shown include one from July between Palin and Alaska Lt. Gov. Sean Parnell and another dated earlier this week from Amy McCorkell, the woman Palin appointed to the Governor's Advisory Board on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse in 2007.
Palin has faced criticism for using a private e-mail account to conduct some state business — prompting critics to allege she was attempting to hide information from the public record.
Now, she can ignore a subpoena from her own government, but theres "outrage" when her privacy is violated? Even when it is discovered she was conducting government business on that email and by the way wouldn' tax payers have at least a tenuous claim on having that knowledge?

Yeah, I read about ctunnel's terms of service - I'd fully expect their host to keep the relevant portions of the logs if only so he doesn't get reamed by the USSS.

Quite. He actually has a very sensible policy that balances privacy and recordkeeping. It's what can be gleaned from other sources combined with that will allow things to be tracked.

How is this at all "epic?" Because those drooling idiots at 4chan are involved?
Indeed; the collision of such massive fail and chaos may leave the world a better place. Anyway, they couldn't have chosen a nicer person to mess with.
It's another dime-a-dozen bad-password hack.
Not even that, apparently it was only a worthless password that was guessed after a few tries by a moron who then neglected to even dump everything before it was reset.
So wait, it is ok for the Republican's to read my personal e-mails without permission (and listen to my phone conversations), but if we do it to them it is an "outrage"?

Well, Ender, when the government does it they only have your best interests in mind. When some hacker does it, it's clearly an act of political sabotage and everything he finds that puts her in a negative light isn't true because he's clearly biased. Or a terrorist. Depends on what week it is.

Conducting government business from a yahoo acount is so enourmously grossly negligent that they should fire her from office. There is guaranteed to be some information in there that she is supposed to keep confidential, and for this "hack" she clearly bears the vast majority of the blame.

I seriously doubt there will be any consequences for her using her private email to conduct government business. To use the secret service to protect her government status while simultaneously denying any wrongdoing or accepting any punnishment for irresonsibility is RIGHT up her alley, she's demonstrating this with her dismissal of a subpoena because its "A political circus".
Cheney lead the way with his executive priviliege bullshit, I think this is a current trend in politics that once you are elected You Are God and you owe the foolish masses nothing. the hacker did not try to steal her credit cards or identity, he exposed her illicit activity in conducting government business on an unsecure unmonitored email.
I'm finding this massively ironic in light of her being painted as a government reformer, she herself is using the secret service to track down the guy who broke into tthe email that she was innapropriately using for government business.

What? She bears the blame because some no-life losers with nothing better to do hacked her email account? By that logic, you might also say that because a woman was in a bad part of town at night and got raped, the rape was her fault for being there.
A Government founded upon justice, and recognizing the equal rights of all men; claiming higher authority for existence, or sanction for its laws, that nature, reason, and the regularly ascertained will of the people; steadily refusing to put its sword and purse in the service of any religious creed or family is a standing offense to most of the Governments of the world, and to some narrow and bigoted people among ourselves.

It's ethically dubious, but regardless of whether or not she was abusing her email use it doesn't change the fact that breaking into a public official's email (private or otherwise) is illegal. If it weren't for all the scandal surrounding her I doubt anyone would be having any second thoughts about hanging the hacker in question up to dry.

If I ever used a personal e-mail account for work related communications I have no doubt that I would be fired, blacklisted, and then brought up on export control charges. I'm just a measly engineer, this woman is a freaking governor.

Are you saying they should just ignore the fact that the hacking itself was illegal even though she might have been using her email for illegal activity?

They should treat it with the same urgency with which they treat any other incident of someone hacking into an ordinary citizen's E-mail account or webboard. That urgency is currently zero, but if it ever increased, I would applaud the change. Nevertheless, I find it really annoying that this particular kind of B&E crime is treated as "only a crime if you do it to someone important". Imagine if it was only a crime to rob rich peoples' houses, but not poor peoples' houses.

I think that as Governor, Palin would have a Top Secret/SCI security clearance. That's about the highest level of clearance you can get in the government, and with that clearance come extraordinarily tight rules about how to properly handle information. It looks like Palin committed violations of all sorts of policy regulations in government relating to security of data by using her private email for government business. The fact that these idiots performed an illegal act by attacking her private email account is largely immaterial.

They should. I just find the double-standard of "She was committing a crime, so it doesn't matter if the way the evidence was gathered was illegal!1!!1!" hilarious. If it had been the police who gathered the info in this way I wouldn't be surprised if the same people in this thread supporting the hacking would be screaming bloody murder.

It's only a double standard if we would in fact react the way you describe. I wouldn't. Evidence is evidence, even if it was collected illegally.

Well, in this case it's pretty obvious both sides should be punished, but unfortunately it's doubtful they're going to do anything at all to Palin over it.

correct. Also apparently 4chan hs declared war on FOX news (probably to be followed up with the other chans and the rest of the internet-FOX and Palin apparently piss off a lot of people). They raided Greta Van Susteren's blog, spammed it and hacked it.

given that they plan to declare war on FOX and mess with Palin some more, this seems likely. as an add-on, apparently some guy will post ALL the emails in 2 days, supposedly someone saved them all (can't find the link now; it was somewhere on http://www.jumpingeoffs.com/ not sure)
EDIT: Michelle Malkin's on it, she is explainign this. It's not per se correct but a decent explanation. This is probably the person who changed Palin's email account and gold her http://michellemalkin.com/2008/09/17/th ... l-hacking/

No no no, he turned of his computer he's fine! :-p
he's backpedaling so fast he could probably go back in time and save lois lane, i love that he actually blames the chatboard members for abusing his nhack. rediculous.
Regarding palin, no, just no. She can't ignore one part of the law and run to the other for protection. She's a person of note, a celebrity, she draws attention, fine she deserves extra security, but that ccomes as a package deal with increased responsibility and accountability. She has to answer the allegations raised against her that she abused her power while in office on the basis of a Vendetta. She also has to acknowledge at LEAST that using her private email to conduct business was pretty retarded.

That depends on whether the owner of the proxy maintains logs. Not everyone logs every transaction; comprehensive logs use up a lot of server disk space after all. Even the Secret Service can't force the proxy owner to give up that which does not exist, assuming the proxy is even located in the United States.
