MTV Bleeps File Sharing Software Out Of Music Videos

Post by Dominus Atheos »

from the you-can't-make-this-stuff-up dept
Reader Matthew Muro writes in to let us know of a rather insane bit of news. MTV's new video hosting site is apparently bleeping out the names of file sharing sites in Weird Al Yankovic's famous 2006 song "Don't Download This Song." The opening verse to the song goes as follows:
Once in a while maybe you will feel the urge
To break international copyright law
By downloading MP3s from file-sharing sites
Like Morpheus or Grokster or Limewire or KaZaA
Yet, in that new MTV version, the last line is "Like *BLEEP* or *BLEEP* or *BLEEP* or *BLEEP*" rather than naming the four file sharing programs. Watch it here

You can see the original (unbleeped) video on Weird Al's own YouTube site, which (again, inexplicably) has embedding disabled, or we'd put it here for comparison purposes.

MTV's actions really have me scratching my head. Do they think that the names of file sharing programs are the equivalent of curse words? Or do they really think that, by bleeping them out, people won't be able to figure out what's in the song? Seems like yet another sign of how out of touch MTV has become from today's musically-inclined youth.

WHAAAA?

That's like bleeping out the words "Cristal", "Pussy" and "Grills" from a Nelly song.

IIRC they do and are increasing the amount of Music Videos played. Heard that from some others. Also there ARE other MTV channels.

You shouldn't have to have more than one channel to listen to music on the goddamn music channel.

Don't any of you pay attention to the news besides the stuff posted on this site? MTV just launched a new website called MTVMusic.com that has nearly every music video ever made.
Remember When MTV Played Videos? New Site Does, Too

I want my MTV ... online?

The cable music channel, which debuted in 1981 with round-the-clock music videos but now primarily focuses on reality programming, has archived its video collection on a new Web site, MTVMusic.com.

"For all of you haters out there griping about how MTV doesn't play music videos anymore, here's something to calm the waters," according to a Tuesday blog post from MTV. "MTVMusic.com offers up a more in-depth library, including over 16,000 videos, "Unplugged" performances and exclusive MTV concert footage."

MTV promised to add more videos daily. It currently filters videos by most viewed, top rated and vintage videos (David Bowie, New Order, Duran Duran ...). Users can also search by artist or song name.

As of Wednesday afternoon, the "most viewed" videos on the site were Britney Spears' "Womanizer," Dire Straits' "Money for Nothing," and Rick Astley's "Never Gonna Give You Up." Insert Rickrolling joke here.

You make the mistake assuming any of us actually care about MTV anymore. Besides, Youtube already has pretty much every music video ever made. (Although censoring file sharing app names from a several year old song is retarded).

Censoring Weird Al Yankovic is so retarded that it's genius

They need them to do their satanic mission of spreading Crazy Frog and related abominations to the cell phones of all teenagers. And also to erode their brains so they buy even more shit, by constantly showing dumber "reality shows" than you can think of.

Aww fuck you, man.

I hadn't even thought about Crazy Frog in months.

That's, like, worse than bringing up The Game in casual conversation.

Someone on slashdot explained it the best. MTV bleeps out advertisements, as part of policy. I belive there was a rap song that mentioned Burger King that was bleeped out, so its not a conspiracy. Also fuck you Sriad, I lost the game.

Mentioning any type of business counts as advertising? MTV is even more fucking stupid than I thought.

Do they censor rap songs that mention Maybachs, Maseratis, Patrone, and other things? Hell, there was a song called Pass the Courvosier(sp?), the fucking brand name of the liquor is in the title/chorus (also a blatant endorsement deal). What about Nelly's Air Force Ones?
