Attorney General Mukasey collapses during speech

WASHINGTON – Attorney General Michael Mukasey collapsed during a speech Thursday night and was being taken to a hospital.

Associate Attorney General Kevin O'Connor said Mukasey began shaking while addressing the Federalist Society at a Washington hotel.

"He just started shaking and he collapsed," O'Connor said. "They're very concerned."

O'Connor said he did not know whether Mukasey, 67, had regained consciousness."

Mukasey was 20 minutes into his speech before he collapsed.

Best of luck to him. Sounds like a stroke or something similar.

Yeah, he apparently started slurring his speech just before the collapse, I'm guessing stroke until proven otherwise.

WashPo has a statement from the DOJ reporting that he is conscious and alert:

At the conclusion of his remarks before the Federalist Society Annual Dinner in Washington, D.C., Attorney General Michael B. Mukasey collapsed.

Upon his collapse, emergency first aid was rendered by the Attorney General's security detail and a doctor who was on the scene.

The Attorney General arrived at George Washington University Hospital shortly thereafter.

The Attorney General is conscious, conversant and alert. His vital statistics are strong and he is in good spirits. He is receiving excellent care and appreciates all of the good wishes and prayers he has received. The doctors will keep him overnight for further observations.
