That thread needs to shape up and return to the topic. I've seen like three pages of a derailed and pointless discussion, dangerously leaning to ad hominem match - there, we're back to the theme.

Re: Pro-Choice bill == WAR OF NORTHERN AGGRESSION!
Here's a bigger question to get back on track: why is it that the convenient historical myths of the American South have found such broad popular exposure over a century on, and remain so well established and strongly connected to contemporary politics?

Might have something to do with the rising amount of people going on about how evil the "gubbermint" is. Combine that with a lack of understanding of what the US Civil War was fought over (most people only get the "free the slaves" Cliff Notes version in high school), and you get a bunch of morons that think the Confederates were led by nobel men trying to throw off the tyranny of a Federal government gone power crazy. But then, I've seen that same line of thinking in places well removed from the American South. Actually met a bunch of "militia" types when I lived in Seattle that went on about how the Confederates were just fighting for the rights of their states, complete with the Star and Bars on their truck bumper. This sort of shit is not limited to the south, though you probably havge a better chance of encountering them down here.

"The South" sometimes refers to geographical placement, but it can also refer to the Confederacy in the Civil War (remember that they were often referred to as "The South"). You're right in the sense that this unfortunate dual-usage term can lead to confusion, but that's just the way it is.Mr. Coffee wrote:Can someone explain to me what some fucktard from Missouri has to do with "Southerners"?

I could by that if Missouri had in fact been part of the Confederacy, but it wasn't.Darth Wong wrote:"The South" sometimes refers to geographical placement, but it can also refer to the Confederacy in the Civil War (remember that they were often referred to as "The South"). Well, the state did harbor significant amounts of pro-Confederate sentiment. Remember where the fuckers who instigated bleeding Kansas came from. That, and Missouri was also a slave state.Mr. Coffee wrote: I could by that if Missouri had in fact been part of the Confederacy, but it wasn't.
Though you do have a point, I wonder why no one lumps Maryland in with the "South" even though it was also host to a signficant amount of pro-Confederate sentiment and a slave state as well.

There wasn't the level of partisan fighting in Maryland, for one major point. It was very quickly suppressed, while Missouri (even though there was little danger of it joining the Confederacy) remained a hot spot throughout the war. That NOS Guy wrote:Well, the state did harbor significant amounts of pro-Confederate sentiment. Kentucky is generally considered part of the "South," although it never joined the Confederacy either.CarsonPalmer wrote:There wasn't the level of partisan fighting in Maryland, for one major point. See, this sort of thing is why I generally consider anything south of the Ohio River from Penn to Missouri to be "the South", the exception being Maryland and Delaware. Really, West-By-God-Virgina doesn't qualify as "the South" to me either, but I'm sure there's a crap load of people that disagree with me on that.SancheztheWhaler wrote:Kentucky is generally considered part of the "South," although it never joined the Confederacy either.

I always considered them Appalacia- don't they have an entirely different dialect than the rest of the country? Admitadly, it is the original and yet you never hear them rub it in our faces.Mr. Coffee wrote:See, this sort of thing is why I generally consider anything south of the Ohio River from Penn to Missouri to be "the South", the exception being Maryland and Delaware. On topic, given that the Federal government uses the commerce clause to justify environmental regulations because people from other states might like to see the birdies, this is barely as convoluted.
Re: Pro-Choice bill == WAR OF NORTHERN AGGRESSION!
IMHO, if you use attitudes and beliefs as defining 'Southern', you'll find a lot of 'Southerners' all over the country.Mr. Coffee wrote:See, this sort of thing is why I generally consider anything south of the Ohio River from Penn to Missouri to be "the South", the exception being Maryland and Delaware. Living on the Indiana/Kentucky border, I know some Kentuckians who are more liberal than most New Yorkers.
Admittedly they are the minority, but such people do exist.
That said, the ones I know have a thick skin about it and just laugh if someone pegs them as a conservatard due to their accent.
Shit, I know I'm considered conservative by a lot of people here but I'm considered to be a raving liberal by a lot of my co-workers and friends.
Of course most of those people think Rush is God and can do no wrong.

Funny this should come up on the 200th anniversary of Lincoln's birth. Lincoln described this lunacy accurately:General Zod wrote:Preventing government interference is a naked power grab? Can someone explain how that broken logic supposedly works, because I'm not seeing it.
Abraham Lincoln wrote:“The shepherd drives the wolf from the sheep's throat, for which the sheep thanks the shepherd as his liberator, while the wolf denounces him for the same act as the destroyer of liberty.”
Missouri may not have been a member of the Confederacy, but that was because the Union Army occupied the state (same goes for Maryland and Kentucky) and it was a slave state and the launching ground for Bleeding Kansas (when Missouri pro-slavery thugs foisted a pro-slavery government on the territory through the use of bombings, assassinations and other forms of intimidation), and brigands like Quantrill. So maybe this asshole is a fan of Jesse James.Mr. Coffee wrote:Can someone explain to me what some fucktard from Missouri has to do with "Southerners"?
In a way, he may be right. Just as a number of states thought the bodies of black people were the property of others, these Fetus Christers think it's for them to decide what women can or can't do with their own bodies.

Dude the Civil Rights Act used even more torturous logic and it has withstood the test of time. This one is on pretty damn firm ground even without the commerce clause. Since its legislation to protect a right under the 14th amendment its already got pretty strong legs.MKSheppard wrote:It's really cute; "Because abortion clinics are commercial entities which buy medicine etc from companies in other states, the Commerce Clause Applies!"
I really would advise NARAL, etc and the Democrat party to let this idiot bill die a quiet death in committee. Why? Because it's so broadly written and on such thin grounds in the way it defines the application of the Commerce Clause; that it could be used for a ton of other things, like for example destroying Gun Control.
