How much gasoline do you think you can get for $81 BILLION?

Post by MagnusTheReD »

Apparently, not much more than a half-full tank...
MSNBC wrote:SPOKANE, Wash. -Juan Zamora says a normal trip to the gas station
turned into an $81 billion mistake when he filled-up his gas tank earlier this week.

Zamora commutes from Spokane to the Hanford Nuclear Reservation in Richland, WA.
Making the drive 4 times per week equates to 700 miles and $100 in gas every week.

Zamora returned home to hear an automated voicemail explain his purchase
at a local gas station was approved for $81,400,836,908.
"I didn't believe the amount myself," he said. "So I played it over and over again."

Over and over again he heard the same amount: $81,400,836,908.

Zamora says it took hours of work on the phone to clear the
billions of dollars of debt, but in the end the bank realized what happened.

"All in all I lost a couple of hours of work," he said. "But I knocked a huge debt off."

And he gained an unforgettable story.

Sorry if it's not exactly N&P worthy - just a little something to cheer everybody up
in the face of the global economy crumbling on the top of our heads :)

I'm disturbed it took hours on the phone to clear this up. You'd think that would just be a 15 minute phone call?

"What?! It says you spent 81 billion at a gas station?! We'll clear that up right away sir!"

No $81 billion fill-up, PayPal says
Company says voice mail to customer on transaction was mistaken

A commuter in Richland, Wash., who thought he had been overcharged — by $81 billion — for a tank of gas was fooled by an error in a voice mail about the transaction, his debit card company said.

Juan Zamora told the Tri-City Herald newspaper this week that he received a communication from PayPal showing a debit card transaction of more than $81 billion, instead of the $26 worth that he said he pumped.

But a spokeswoman for PayPal, Sara Gorman, said Friday that misunderstanding was the result of a mistake in a voice mail from a PayPal processing partner about the transaction that put the merchant identification number where the amount should have been. “I can assure you that we did not charge him $81 billion,” Gorman said.

Zamora told the newspaper he had called customer service for PayPal and that the matter had been resolved after some discussion.

I almost lost all my confidence in the modern banking system when I read the first report,
so thanks to you, now I can stop stuffing all my money into jars and hiding them under my bed :?

PayPal issues a regular ol' credit and a debit card so yes you can.

I thought this story was about Zimbabwe from the title. On the subject of multi billion dollar purchases at my old work certain products would regularly scan in as costing hundreds of millions of dollars.

I'd be curious to know the exact nature of the error. File processing error, or human input.

If it's human input, maybe increasing the Font size on the field names would be a good idea, and moving number fields apart from each other.
I've been asked why I still follow a few of the people I know on Facebook with 'interesting political habits and view points'.

It's so when they comment on or approve of something, I know what pages to block/what not to vote for.
