After seeing Duchess' picture, I withdraw my concern about the Chinese grappling hook guy taking things too far.
Wow.
It seems unlikely that the ramming in question was intentional, whereas there is little doubt re the Chinese.
Quite, though the Krivak in question was obviously playing games with the Yorktown that involved a very high risk of collision, and one happened. Hell, look at the guy standing atop the bridge, the further to the left in the picture of the two--at full mag he looks like he's grinning. "Take that, yankee!"

At least the second ramming looks intentional - watch at 2:37 when the Bezzavetny turns towards the Yorktown.

A decision must be made in the life of every nation at the very moment when the grasp of the enemy is at its throat. Then, it seems that the only way to survive is to use the means of the enemy, to rest survival upon what is expedient, to look the other way. Well, the answer to that is 'survival as what'? A country isn't a rock. It's not an extension of one's self. It's what it stands for. It's what it stands for when standing for something is the most difficult! - Chief Judge Haywood

Yeah, some of those videos sure make it look like it was intentional. And the ramming ship was much less massive than the Yorktown was, or so it seems from the things I am reading up on it now.

If I recall right, a number of fishing trawlers form part of the merchant marine that's used for all manner of business not official and official

Chinese are probably playing silly buggers to see what Obama will do since he is the new guy. Remember that P3 incident in 2000 that got the headlines because that idiot PLAAF pilot got a bit too close and went in the drink?Same reasoning perhaps?.

That and territorial dick-wagging. They claim bunch of islands and atolls, some barely underwater, in the area and they've been in pissing matches with all the other local governments over it for years. If they let the US cruise through without a fuss, it weakens their bluster before, say, the Filipinos.
Something about Libertarianism always bothered me. Then one day, I realized what it was:
Libertarian philosophy can be boiled down to the phrase, "Work Will Make You Free."
In Libertarianism, there is no Government, so the Bosses are free to exploit the Workers.
In Communism, there is no Government, so the Workers are free to exploit the Bosses.
So in Libertarianism, man exploits man, but in Communism, its the other way around! If all you want to do is have some harmless, mindless fun, go H3RE INST3ADZ0RZ!! Grrr! Fight my Brute, you pansy!
Indeed. People forget about these little territorial disputes and crap that still goes on everywhere in the world. Hell, someone really earnestly wondered why Greece needed heavy hovercrafts like the Zubr from Russia, "it has no one to fight" - damn right, if you don't pay attention to small scale disputes

They still hate Turkey? I don't think that Bulgeria, Macedonia or Albania is an enemy, but I can't believe that the Greeks and Turks are still fighting. What has it been- 150 years?

Don't some of these have nearby oil claims? There is one that three countries are arguing is theirs because of nearby islands.

If you're talking about the Spratlys, which China, Malaysia, the Philippines, Taiwan, and Vietnam have all been bickering over since the 1950s, they have been confirmed to have petroleum deposits. I'm not too sure about the Paracels (China, Taiwan, and Vietnam) or Scarborough Shoal (China, Philippines, Taiwan), though.

About 180 since we declared independence, but we've been involved in quite a few wars with them since then, some very bloody, and with the latest being their invasion of Cyprus in 1974. Our current problems stem not so much from the past though, even if revanchist sentiments run relatively high here, but from current disputes, mostly their claim of half the Aegean, but also the continuing occupation of northern Cyprus, their treatment of the Orthodox Patriarchy, etc. We also have problems with all of our other neighbours other than Bulgaria, but their military strength is insignificant.
I thought the Bulgarians are still sore about the results of the Third(?) Balkans War in 1912 and territorial losses after World War One?
Turns out that a five way cross over between It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, the Ali G Show, Fargo, Idiocracy and Veep is a lot less funny when you're actually living in it.
We certainly don't have a problem with them. I don't know if they have a problem with us though. And it was the Second Balkan War that they lost. A war they started, incidentally.
But this is getting off topic. We should probably start a new one if we're to discuss the Balkans and their problems.
