Olbermann: My Father Asked Me To Kill Him
A special comment (video link) from February 24th which touches upon the dilemma faced by millions of American families in the country "with the Best Health Care System™ in the world".

Oil an emergency?! It's about time, Brigadier, that the leaders of this planet of yours realised that to remain dependent upon a mineral slime simply doesn't make sense.

Re: Olbermann: My Father Asked Me To Kill Him
I actually got choked up while watching that the other day. And knowing that wackos on the right have been constantly MOCKING Keith whenever he mentions his Dad in the Hospital infuriated me all the more. I wonder if a single one of them watched his heart felt commentary or would even concede anything to it.Patrick Degan wrote:A special comment (video link) from February 24th which touches upon the dilemma faced by millions of American families in the country "with the Best Health Care System™ in the world".
Personally my take on his speech was that his Dad has been through every machine every drug and every test at the hospital, and has been able to PAY FOR IT because (drum roll please) he has MEDICARE.. thats a GOVERNMENT RUN Health care system. That in fact, if Keiths Dad had been on virtually any 'normal' private Healthcare plan, he'd either be Broke at this point, or DEAD.

Re: Olbermann: My Father Asked Me To Kill Him
I really respect how Keith was able to hold his composure while going over that very personal and emotional aspect of his life, and still verbally fight for other people to get the same right to care his dad is getting.

Health care aside, I was amazed he actually delved into the notion about how much pain and constant bother competent health care gives a person trying to keep them alive. As he put it, torture.
They say, "the tree of liberty must be watered with the blood of tyrants and patriots." I suppose it never occurred to them that they are the tyrants, not the patriots. Those weapons are not being used to fight some kind of tyranny; they are bringing them to an event where people are getting together to talk. -Mike Wong

I've noticed a lot of people in general have a very irrational view on death; keeping individuals alive is more important than evaluating the physical and/or mental torture that continuing to live inflicts on them.Knife wrote:Health care aside, I was amazed he actually delved into the notion about how much pain and constant bother competent health care gives a person trying to keep them alive. Even regular care is...physically exhaustive for some patients. Violations in all sorts of ways, checks and assessments all through the night, and plenty of other ways patients are bothered.Singular Intellect wrote:I've noticed a lot of people in general have a very irrational view on death; keeping individuals alive is more important than evaluating the physical and/or mental torture that continuing to live inflicts on them.Knife wrote:Health care aside, I was amazed he actually delved into the notion about how much pain and constant bother competent health care gives a person trying to keep them alive. Re: Olbermann: My Father Asked Me To Kill Him
Being in the hospital for an extended length is shitty no matter what you're in for. It's physical and mental drain on top of whatever you're already suffering from.

Actually, Medicare still has copays. Without a supplemental insurance or personal wealth, a severe and prolonged illness can still be a huge financial burden.Crossroads Inc. wrote:I actually got choked up while watching that the other day. Re: Olbermann: My Father Asked Me To Kill Him
wow. That was painful. It makes me just sick of all the "death panel" liars who spread that bullshit
Re: Olbermann: My Father Asked Me To Kill Him
This also handily illustrates a point Broomstick and some others raised earlier. The role of the caregiver (or the relatives in general) is not a picnic. Yeah, I can understand people disliking Olberman; his style and rhetoric is often stilted and his outrage a bit too formalized for my tastes.
That doesn't matter, though. To look at this and laugh at the man's suffering is the reaction of an unfeeling sadist. Even if Sarah Palin had gone on TV talking about a dying Bush, mocking her wouldn't even have fucking occurred to me. Or at least I hope it wouldn't have, because it would have meant signing over my humanity.

Re: Olbermann: My Father Asked Me To Kill Him
I don't know if anyone "laughed" at him for that comment, but up until that point, Keith has been routinely Mocked for mentioning his fathers condition by people on the right, usually saying either A: his dad isn't THAT sick, or B: Keith is shamelessly using his Dad for his own even goals!Aasharu wrote:Wait, people actually laughed at Keith Olbermann for this special comment of his?
yeah, they went There...

Re: Olbermann: My Father Asked Me To Kill Him
One of the things Olbermann talked about was that with his father's medicare and some supplimental insurance, for the past month his own out-of-pocket medical expenses had been greater than his father's. And then he talked about all the people having to make descisions like he and his father were, but having to worry about the money.Johonebesus wrote:Actually, Medicare still has copays. I can't believe he held it together. I was crying by the end.
"They do it for money!" There was such anger, disapointment, and an overwhelming sense of disbelief in that statment.

Nitram never gets enough sleep in a hospital, with the machines beeping and the nurses walking by outside. He is poked, prodded, has his blood pressure checked, has blood withdrawn... And of course, there's the Hospital Food.Knife wrote:Even regular care is...physically exhaustive for some patients. I sometimes thing he's worse mentally once he's out of the hospital than when he went in.

Me: Nope, that's why I have you around to tell me.
Nitram: You -are- beautiful. Anyone tries to tell you otherwise kill them.

It's not a good experience, that's for sure. The sense of powerlessness, the strange and perhaps frightening new environment, the invasive procedures, all the things that have to be done, the procedures, the anxiety, the unwellness, the sickness. It's not a pleasant thing to be in a hospital, or to be sick for that matter. Hell, that's why healthcare intervention is successful when the patient's progressed to the point where he gets out of the hospital. ![Very Happy :D](./images/smilies/icon_biggrin.gif)
