Pretty much what Guppy said. It's a little different in all states, but it's usually used as a way to expose students in their first year of high school to all areas of social science, before they decide what subjects to focus on in their senior years.

Re: High school teacher asks class to plan terror attack
I took a similar class as an elective in college. It was called 'Terrorism and War'. We had a few assignments like that, and most of the students had really stupid plans (in half of them step 1 was 'steal a nuke'). The three scenarios I designed were;
1. Bus/transit bombs in urban areas.
2. Contaminating water supplies.
3. Destroying high density electrical lines.
My proposals were a bit specific, after the second I was forbidden from sharing them openly with the class.

Sounds like a course I would have taken Chewie. I was lucky enough to have a teacher teaching what is basically a first year history course in high school it was war and society and was pretty enlightening as it touched a little on war in all eras.

A bit OT but would it be OK to start a thread in this forum basically asking the same question as was asked in OP or would that violate the forum rules?

I'm no longer a mod, but this would probably be pretty sketchy.cosmicalstorm wrote:A bit OT but would it be OK to start a thread in this forum basically asking the same question as was asked in OP or would that violate the forum rules?

Most likely it wasn't. Would it violate the forum rules and/or get Mike in trouble with the Canadian government? It's an horrifying yet fascinating topic, really. As a though experiment, is it really so horrible - people can logically explore topics that are abhorrent all the time without subscribing to those views. I'm absolutely certain he doesn't intend to go out and commit any acts of violence, just is morbidly curious as to what the minds of SDN can come up with with any given posited rules of resources and a given (if heinous) goal.Dalton wrote:Is that a joke?cosmicalstorm wrote:A bit OT but would it be OK to start a thread in this forum basically asking the same question as was asked in OP or would that violate the forum rules?
Of course, it would almost certainly get everyone who participated in the thread on a watch list...

Two things, SD#: 1. Turn on your sarcasm detector (if available on your model). 2. I really don't need your two cents or your attempts at playing Devil's Advocate. When I asked "Is this a joke?" what I really meant was "Fuck no". I guess some people need it spelled out for them.

Bruce Schneier runs a yearly design a terrorism scenario contest. Got an idea? save it for then. Some of them are pretty inventive.
