Taiwan politician's son shot on eve of election

Post by ray245 »

The son of Taiwan's former Vice President Lien Chan has been shot in the face while campaigning for local elections, police say.

Medical officials said Lien Cheng-wen was in a stable condition.

He was speaking at an election rally on behalf of a ruling Kuomintang party candidate in suburban Taipei when a man approached and shot him, reports said.

Saturday's elections are being seen as a key test of the Kuomintang's policy of closer ties with mainland China.

A suspect was arrested at the scene of the attack on Mr Lien with a gun and 48 bullets, a local police official said.

Another man was hit, reportedly by the same bullet that struck Mr Lien, and killed.

"Taiwan is a democracy," President Ma Ying-jeou said after visiting Mr Lien at a Taipei hospital. "We will not tolerate such violence."

Hospital officials said the bullet struck the left side of Mr Lien's face and exited from his right temple.

A Kuomintang party spokesman said Mr Lien's brain had not been damaged.

The Kuomintang's Mr Ma was elected president in 2008. Earlier this year Taiwan and China signed a historic trade pact that some analysts described as the most significant agreement since the two sides split at the end of China's civil war in 1949.

Mr Ma's predecessor, the Democratic Progressive Party's Chen Shui-bian, severely strained relations with China by making moves towards formal independence.

What's with Taiwan having their politicians shot on the eve of elections?
Humans are such funny creatures. We are selfish about selflessness, yet we can love something so much that we can hate something.

What's with Taiwan having their politicians shot on the eve of elections?
Because the KMT is running out of tricks to save their popularity?

Nah, the opposition shoots itself plenty without assistance...

Tsai was certainly tactless enough to say that the shooting reflected how "Taiwan had become more unsafe with the KMT in charge" (words to that effect). Stupid people deserve what they get.

I'm surprised Hau won by that much.

Well Hey, it won't be the first time someone tried to win by sympathy vote in Taiwan last I recall.

Yeah the blue/green blindness is still quite strong in Taipei. But the numbers are still ridiculous considering Hau's performance during the past 4 years.

Personally I think the 19-year sentence of A-Bian was one of the factors that helped a lot. And since another case of his is in appeal, this won't be the last time we see him getting used as a relief man for KMT's popularity.

A-Bian's son's results also show that there is still a strong support of A-Bian in the Pan-Green crowd. Something that will still affect the DPP.

The "Save Me!!!!1111" type campaign has reached a point that even popular candidates use it.

What makes this election interesting is that KMT had a relatively close call in the Taichung area, where DPP usually lacks support and there didn't even seem much news coverage on Su Jia-Chuan.

Also wholly speaking the DPP got 50% votes, KMT got 45% and the rest 5% was mainly coming from supporters of Yang in Kaohsiung. The momentum of the DPP (starting from some minor elections after 2008) hasn't really stopped.

However, they still lack good candidates for next year (legislatives) and so far it seems that no one in the DPP can stand up for president. Ma will likely survive 2012 with still no one to regulate him.

That's assuming that people don't care about the improving economy.

I wonder how long Tsai can hold on to power, though all the alternatives are worse than her.

Funny how Chen Chih Chung may have cost the DPP the Kaoshiung City Council plurality, not that I'm complaining, mind you.

Of course people care, since no one feels it.

Tsai probably still needs some more elections to get used to the flow.

Chen sucked a whole whopper of 30K something when the lower limit was 16K. Definitely had an effect.

I don't really see anything drastic as a sea change from the previous county and municipal elections.

Hau's share of the vote was about the same as his first time running (55.65% in 2010 (797,865) vs 53.81% in 2006 (692,085)), share of seats on Taipei City Council stayed about the same. I doubt that 100,000 additional voters would have suddenly run out to the polls just because of the shooting.

As for Xinbei, I would hardly call a 5% margin of victory close. Certainly not a landslide, granted. I don't suppose you have the figures for the 2005 county elections in Taipei County?

The only real surprise is that Hu had such a close run in at Taichung and that the KMT somehow obtained a plurality on the Kaoshiung City Council, because Kaoshiung County is so absurdly pan green.

I would hardly call that a DPP ascendancy or revival.

Like I said, I'm suprised and not suprised with Taipei City's results. The DPP should really give up any efforts over here and focus their resources on the other cities.

Numbers from:
http://210.69.23.140/cec/cechead.asp
and wikipedia.

2005, Result of Taipei County (vote rate: 78.83%)
KMT 988,739 (54.87%)
DPP 798,233 (44.30%)

2010, Result of Xinbei (vote rate: 71.25%)
KMT 1,115,536 (52.61%)
DPP 1,004,900 (47.39%)

-----------------------------------------

Result of 2008 Presidential Election

KMT 7,658,724 (58.45%)
DPP 5,445,239 (41.33%)

Result of 2009 County Election

KMT: 2,094,518 (47.88%)
DPP: 1,982,914 (45.32%)
Hakka Party: 0.36%
No affiliation: 281,693 (6.44%)

Result of 2010 Direct-Controlled Municipality

KMT: 3,369,052 44.54%
DPP: 3,772,373 49.87%
No affiliation: 422,692 5.59%

Total results of 2009 + 2010 is

KMT: 5,463,570 (48.7%)
DPP : 5,755,287 (51.3%)

I'm not quite sure about the ones who voted for no affiliation, 2009's candidates seemed to be mostly consisted of ex-KMTers while the main one in 2010 was Yang who was ex-DPP, so it may or may not have significance.

Comparing the current performance, DPP has only gained 300K votes, while the 7M epic win of Ma Ying-Jeou has dropped 2M due to "The Greater Environment", "Bad communication" and whatever other reason the KMT tossed out. Maybe the 2M will show up in 2012 or when suddenly Ma pulls out a miracle and his "633" promise is suddenly fulfilled overnight.

Thanks.

The KMT couldn't be expected to keep the 7m total, especially for something like midterms (people living aboard generally can't be bothered to pay all the money for a plane ride to come back for a local election, presidential ones seem to be a different matter).

Besides, turnout is typically much, much higher for nationwide races.
