Possible suicidebomb in Stockholm

Post by cosmicalstorm »

This is breaking news here in Sweden. There are all kinds of rumors, people claim he shouted in arabic and wore a palestina flag. Though this might turn out to be some strange accident, still developing.
The story is still developing, but at 16:50 PM a man blew himself up in central Stockholm, Sweden, on Bryggargatan. One dead is reported and a couple of people have been injured.

Aftonbladet is going as far as reporting that the man apparently had a backpack filled with nails and explosives and 6 pipebombs which he set off after having shouted in something that “sounded like arabic”.

A source says that if the man had managed to get to Drottninggatan, there would have been a massacre.

For some reason did the wiring fail and only one of the pipebombs went off.
So far most info is in Swedish.

BBC has some details
11 December 2010 Last updated at 15:58 ET
Sweden: Stockholm blasts kill one and injures two

Hector Eguia captured the second explosion on this video.

One person has been killed and two others injured as two explosions rocked the centre of the Swedish capital, Stockholm, police say.

A car blew up near the busy shopping street of Drottninggatan, and another explosion hit nearby minutes later.

A man's body was discovered after the second blast.

A police spokeswoman, Petra Sjolander, said the car contained gas canisters and that the cause of the explosions was being investigated.

She said the car caught fire "following a series of explosions which could be those of gas canisters" inside the vehicle.

Ms Sjolander said it was unclear if the two blasts were linked.

"I can't confirm that the death is linked to the car explosion, but I can't rule it out either," AFP news agency quoted her as saying.

The identities of the victims have not been released.

A former employee of the Associated Press news agency, Gabriel Gabiro, was close to the second blast.

"I saw some people crying, perhaps from the shock," he told the agency.

"There was a man lying on the ground with blood coming out in the area of his belly, and with his personal belongings scattered around him."

Apparently the guy had sent a letter to the press and police where he talks about jihad, sweden in Afghanistan and Lars Vilks.

What a lousy weekend-terrorist. The only person dead, is himself.

I'm not impressed.

Two explosions, the only person dead is himself - my bet would be an incompetent bomber, not a suicide bomber.
"There are two novels that can change a bookish fourteen-year old's life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other, of course, involves orcs." - John Rogers

Last BBC News bulletin I heard seems to confirm that hypothesis; apparently he was carrying at least one other device that went off prematurely.

It also turns out he'd spent the past ten years living in Luton, which frankly explains a lot.

In the UK, that name has become synonymus with "Place where crazy Islamists live", since a number of the more prominent cases (and numerous less prominent ones) come from there. It has gotten quite a reputation - and it is not positive.

I was actually referring to the fact that Luton is the most mind-bogglingly, soul-destroyingly awful place I've ever had the misfortune to live, and ten years living there would drive almost anyone mad.

But since you bring it up, the BBC also pointed out that he got himself kicked out of his local mosque for spouting off about jihad all the time.

Seriously? You'd think they'd get along with him just fine, considering they have stuff like this on their website:
The zionist war is just the same. The jews strive their utmost to corrupt the beliefs, morals and manners of the Muslims. The jews scheme and crave after possessing the Muslim lands, as well as the lands of others. They have fulfilled some of their plans and continue striving hard to implement the rest of them. Even though they do engage the Muslims in warfare involving strength and arms and have occupied some of their lands, they also fight them by spreading destructive thoughts, beliefs and ideologies; such as Freemasonry, Qadiaanisim, Bahaaism, Teejaanism and others - seeking the support of the christians and others, in order to fulfill their objectives

That and similar texts on the site are indeed more than a little alarming, but here are a couple of points to consider.

1. There's a big difference between holding views that secular society find offensive and going out and committing murder in the name of those views.
2. I didn't check who wrote all the stuff up there, but I get the impression that not much of it was produced by Luton Islamic Centre members. Maybe one of the lunatic-fringe groups gave them a donation in return for hosting a bunch of PDFs?
3. The author of the text you linked to was in his eighties when he wrote it, and I suspect that reactionary, set in their ways geriatrics whom everyone humours out of politeness can be found in every culture.

Not necessarily; he could've been blowing their cover. The Islamic concept of "hudna" is all about brokering a ceasefire for surreptitious rearmament, and he could've been calling attention to the fact that they were not moderate Muslims acting in good faith.
