Raymond Davis (aka Bourne) is free.

Post by MKSheppard »

Was released from custody in Pakistan, after the US Government paid between $1.4 and $2.4 million ($700k to $1.2 million to each family of the two men he killed).

He was let go with time served and after a fine of $234~ for illegal weapons.

Naturally, the Pakistani masses are shitting a brick and all enraged, not comprehending that we took advantage of their sad backward religious laws to do so:

Under Pakistani law, "blood money" is a legal means of securing forgiveness from the victims. Under the qasas and diyat laws, derived from Islamic jurisprudence, a court can release an accused person if the victim's family agrees to a satisfactory cash settlement. The Shari'a-based laws are invoked in the majority of murder cases, Pakistani legal experts say.
So yeah, if you are a rich grot, you can essentially run over the peasants in Pakistan with your Mercedes SLK C500D Supershroomturbocharged; as long as you pay the peasants families blood money.

Got to love the irony.

Speaking of irony, I liked how the Americans were enraged that this guy was risking trial in Pakistan for murdering two people, while so many Pakistanians are held in Guantanamo without any trial.

Even better. The two people he shot dead were ISI agents trailing him. :D

A third person was run over and killed by his extraction team. But nobody cares about that third person, just the two ISI grotz.

...we were enraged? Really? I can't say I noticed much of that going around.

Sorry, replace "the Americans" with "Washington"

Heard it yesterday on BBC news. They also quoted the victims families being pissed off about being forced to accept this bribe instead of getting their justice.

That spy angle was something I wasn't aware of until today. It makes a hell of a lot of sense actually. Previously a US diplomat had dragged a Pakistani citizen to death while drunk and he was out of the nation in less than 24 hours. The ISI must be happy as clams I would imagine. Whatever project the CIA was working on that they disapproved of is likely proper fucked now, only for the price of a couple disposable gun men.

I guess there are some advantages to having some parts of the world still embracing medieval concepts of justice and equality.

Unless this was all just a smokescreen for their real operation, which has gone off without a hitch. /tinfoilhat

News to me as well, actually. The Guardian quoted a local police spokesman saying the two men he shot were convicted armed robbers, and the consensus seemed to be that they were in the process of carjacking him when he opened fire. Which doesn't entirely let him off the hook, I might add, given that one of them was shot in the back.
There are hardly any excesses of the most crazed psychopath that cannot easily be duplicated by a normal kindly family man who just comes in to work every day and has a job to do.
