Signs calling the PM a bitch. Remember, you can insult the person but not the office, unless the office is held by someone you don't like. TickThey were savage with their signs about Julia Gillard and loving in their reception of Tony Abbott on the lawns fronting Parliament House today.
The No Carbon Tax rally, said to number 3000 protesters by organisers, made clear who they thought were the heroes and villains of the climate change policy debate. However, rival group GetUp! said the police had estimated the crowd at 1500.
Placards said the Prime Minister was a "witch'' and one suggested she was a "bitch'' - Greens leader Bob Brown's bitch in fact.
But there was nothing but adoration for the Opposition Leader, amid chants of "Tony, Tony, Tony.''
"Congratulations to you for coming out today and letting the Government of Australia know that the people of Australia can never be taken for granted,'' said Mr Abbott.
He told "this crowd of fine Australians'' he did not see "scientific heretics'' or "environmental vandals''.
"I see people who want honest government,'' he said.
And when he quoted Ms Gillard's words from six days before the last election - "There will be no carbon tax under a government I lead'' - the protesters were word perfect as they repeated them along with him.
"She's a Communist,'' interjected a man near the stage where Mr Abbott spoke. "That's it,'' said a nearby woman approvingly.
One placard challenged the idea of global warming by saying the polar bears were doing OK, Mr Abbott continued: "I don't think this is about climate change.
"Climate change happens; mankind does make a contribution. It's important to have an intelligent response, not a stupid one.
"And an intelligent response to climate change means more trees, better soils, and smarter technology. It doesn't mean a great big new tax that just for starters will drive your power bill up by $300 a year...''
Mr Abbott warned about misinformation "in the course of this carbon tax fight''.
By ten his time was running short as a division was expected in the House of Representatives and Mr Abbott, and the half a dozen Liberal and National MPs with him, had to leave the stage.
But there was time for one last crowd pleaser - a dig at the atheist Prime Minister.
"I was delighted to hear the Prime Minister say the other day that she had learned a lot from scripture lessons,'' said Mr Abbott to lots of sneering chortles from the crowd.
"Yeh,'' yelled one man barely able to recover from his mirth, "She's going to Hell.''
Mr Abbott continued: "Thou shalt not bear false witness.
"And I say in conclusion, even Prime Ministers are entitled to change their mind. But a Prime Minister is not entitled to change her mind on something as important as this without going back to the people and seeking a mandate.''
Religious bigotry. Tick.
Bullshit arguments. Tick.
Whining about a mere $300. Oh noooes. The world is ending. Never mind a $900 stimulus package Rudd gave. Or the $31 billion tax cuts from the Rudd government. Tick.
Why does this remind me of the American Tea Party? A better question, why don't we see this type of behaviour from the left of politics?
