Good news about: Malaria deaths

Namely, there have been less and less of them. Over the past decade, deaths by Malaria have fallen 40%. The disease has been entirely eradicated in Morocco, Turkmenistan, and Armenia. The WHO's goal is to eliminate it from 8 to 10 more nations by 2015.

It was already eradicated in Turkmenistan back in 1963. The fact that it came back in 1991 and persisted until 2010 is a sad story. What is even more sad, however, is that malaria was annihilated by 1963 in the entirety of Soviet Central Asia (Tajikistan, Azerbajan, Georgia, Armenia, Kyrgyzia and Turkmenistan), and it returned after 1991 - not immediately, but slowly as these nations fell into civil wars, healthcare collapsed and and anti-sanitary behaviour became rampant and widespread.

A similiar story with polio, we came extremely close to getting rid of it for good, but I think it was either some superstitious crap or a lack of education that allowed it a second lease of life.
At least malaria appears to be on a second decline, however. Let's hope it's for good this time.

I doubt it will be. All it takes is one insane fundie of any religion (betting on Christian or Muslim) and we have to go through yet more decades of suffering due to that douchebag's semen for brains not knowing his head from his ass on these matters. :(

Aren't anti- Malaria crippled more by the budget and low publicity rather than ideologies? Simple stuff like mosquito nets, to more centralied efforts of pesticide spraying are the norm.

As it is, the world first malaria vaccine hasn't gone out of trials yet, isn't it?

I don't know about the vaccine, but yes, other preventive devices like mosquito nets would help considerably. The main thing is that malaria can be spread as long as someone has it in their bloodstream, and it can stay there for a LONG time. That's why it'll pop up in areas where there haven't been cases for a long time-- someone moves there who has had malaria, mosquito bites him, it starts over.

As such, mosquito nets, draining areas of standing water or allowing for better water circulation, etc, are good solutions, but they just don't get much help even though a mosquito net can cost as little as five dollars or less...
It's a strange world. Let's keep it that way.

Just today there was an article about a promising malaria vaccine in spiegel.de

It appears that the vaccine reduced the chance of getting malaria by about 50%.

I mean how it seems like you try to wipe out a disease in a continent and nearly succeed, then all of sudden comes a long a retard who doesn't know what the hell they're doing about medicine and you have an epidemic on your hands thanks to that shithead.
