Crte anger or annoyance, the steer it onto your enemies. That's what Joyce has been doing with the media (who laps it all up), so when people think 'wow that was annoying' they won't blame him or any of his inflated housing prices. They'll blame the workers.

It's textbook stuff.
I don't think that was a good idea after giving yourself a 71% pay rise. I don't think it will play well with the public. From what I have seen of ABC and Sky News, a lot of people are pointing out that the union's actions haven't been particularly militant or threatening to warrant such a drastic immediate action.

Seriously, what was he thinking? His rambling press conferences haven't helped him either.

The man of small non-interventionist government, lol.

Look, you have to keep the planes running, otherwise you'll just have more people coming over on boats, ok? And everyone knows that stopping the boats is more important than every other policy in the entire history of Australia.

No, I thought that was the pokies reform. Tony Abbott claims it's undermining "social fabric of Australia" and will destroy clubs all over Australia....except those in Western Australia which operate just fine without them.

I'm fairly certain that the people who are advocating pokies reform came into the country on a boat.

Nah, you're both missing the obvious. Now that we are going to have a carbon tax, no aeroplanes flying are going to make our emissions levels dangerously low, which will obviously cause our entire society to collapse.

The narrative over the weekend in the media is even more one-sided than I thought. Open the Australian; read endless reams of fat white people who are literally celebrating, toasting the death of unions and talking about how it's totally unreasonable that workers try to influence the management of their company. Whatever 'management' decides is just what you have to live with - an attitude that attacks the heard of not only collective action, but industrial relations in general.

Meanwhile, my company sells organisational culture restructures that emphasise employees as stakeholders, the importance of buy-in at all levels, the benefits of accessible management, etc. Clearly, giant faceless mining companies are significantly less into class warfare than airline people.

I'm not very familiar with Qantas, but how much of this is due to Alan Joyce reportedly being a huge dick in every facet of his life*, and how much due to airline people being less in touch with good management practices than, say, mining people?

I've seen some of what you're talking about up north in Fort McMurray, the companies must realize that good relations with labour is their key to success. When mining company bosses have to get their boots dirty a little they get to see the people they're employing, I guess. I doubt Alan Joyce spends much time among the baggage handlers or ticket counters.

*This is just what I've heard, I'm even less familiar with Joyce

the giant faceless slightly Australian mining company operating just north of me has a bit of a reputation for 'corporate restructuring' especially if you're about to retire on the company pension.

The current disagreements between the management and the unions has been long running from outsourcing of engineering jobs to external providers (often with racist overtones) to a few other things, and now Qantas wants to relocate some 1000 jobs overseas because it wants to relocate some operations.

No doubt Qantas management is often full of dicks, but historically across the airline industry, the relationship between management and union have been rarely if ever cordial, never mind the pilots who have their heads up their ass with attitudes no doubt dating from their days as air force pilots with all the arrogance to boot.

It's funny that reacting to maintenance so bad they blew up a reliable engine in a few weeks by chasing training and facilities is seen as 'militant', but it's clear that the corner - cutting has been leading up to outsourcing for some time.

But that the reaction isn't 'this union is bad' or 'this strike is bad' but 'fuck yeah death to worker organisation time for a reality check poor people' is the significant part. Australian unions have done dumb shit since forever, but that this has so quickly becone about worker vs management rights is hilarious.
