No need to bet. These people have already been asked, by the police and by the medias, and if people were suspecting he was going to have a "bad end" (the child had already spent 18 month in prison), no one, and I say no one [*] thought he could turn to religious fanaticism and terrorism.
Typically, even if we were living in a police state, it is doubtful the authorities could have done anything to prevent what he has done, short of preemptively sending to the "camps" every muslim everyone [**] with an history of violence who has gone to AfPak and returned, and hunting all the radical Imam and other preachers of hate that can be found preaching in the least favored part of our cities...
As the saying goes, "shit happens". Horrifically traumatic shit...
We can't control everything.
