Armored car guards killed in Edmonton, Alberta

Three G4S Cash Services armed guards where apparently shot dead and a fourth guard seriously injured after being shot by a 21 year old G4S employee.

The shooting occured near student housing areas of a local university, but few people where around as the school is out for summer break.

In student housing. HUB Mall is a mall with apartments on the upper levels and studios below. Students were studying for spring term final exams at the time of the shooting. Rutherford library is connected to the mall, as is Fine Arts, Law, near the shooting, and the Tory tower and Business buildings on the other end.

Failure of the university to activate the emergency alert system after the shooting is a hot topic right now. The administration are trying to wave away their lack of notification, when people live above the shooting, as it wasn't a 'school shooting' and no students or staff were involved. Twitter was the only thing keeping people aware of what was happening.

Well, to be fair to the university, it wasn't a school shooting, it happened in a place of business. It happened in a very secluded place, in the access area behind a bank machine, I assume they mean ATM. From what it sounds like to me, the shooter went in there with his crew, got greedy, shot the three that were loading and then as he was fleeing, ran into the driver of the crew and shot him. And anyway, by the time the school would have known what was going on, the police were on scene and it was clear that the gunman had fled the area.


Anyway, this is why I don't work armored transit. You always gotta worry about someone on the street getting greedy and deciding that attacking the guard and stealing the money is worth the risk. And of course, in the back of your mind, you always are wondering if your partners on your crew are as trustworthy as you are.

I can't speak for Edmonton, Canada in general, or a lot of places in the US, but at the school I went to, the public safety department would try and send some sort of alert message out across campus or over the school website at least if something unusual happened, even if it wasn't physically on school property.

From what I've read, it sounds as if they aren't sure if the person they believe did this even took any money.

The amount of money was specifically about or exactly 334,000 Canadian dollars in a backpack. They definitely are permitted to and they were all armed at the time, but that doesn't necessarily help much if a coworker suddenly starts shooting them out of the blue.

The place of business is a student residence and popular 24-hour study space. The mall is a long corridor, with shops on the main level, and apartments just above. You can see people in their apartments from the main level.

Judging by the photos you posted elsewhere, Phant, it looked like the crime scene was in the main corridor near one of the entrances. How could anyone consider that a "very secluded spot"?

At the University of Maryland (where I work), recently there was a robbery. It was off-campus, in that it was more than a mile away from the nearest university owned building. An individual in their car, who was not associated with the university, was robbed by two youths, also not associated with the university. A notification was still sent out to every student, staff, or faculty member at the university. This is par for course in many institutions.

Not to report a shooting, especially with any sort of proximity to a school, is the height of ridiculousness.
