Piratebay relocates to North Korea

Post by Murazor »

It would appear this is not an April's Fools.

Article here.

After Being Cut From Norway, The Pirate Bay Returns From North Korea

The Pirate Bay is back online. Its new provider turned out to be none less than one in North Korea. This has all sorts of interesting geopolitical consequences.

People using The Pirate Bay right now will observe that it’s slightly slower than usual. Earlier today, the Norwegian Pirate Party sent a press release that they no longer supplied bandwidth to The Pirate Bay, as the party’s uplink had caved to threats from the copyright industry about kicking out The Pirate Bay. (This remains a concern in itself.)

Ten minutes after that article was posted, The Pirate Bay came back online with a new provider that was as-yet unidentified. The swarm has worked and discovered the origins of the new provider: North Korea.

This has all sorts of interesting geopolitical consequences.

(For the technically interested, the last link in the traceroute chain is 175.45.177.217. A whois lookup will tell you that this is an ISP based in North Korea.)

North Korea may have the one government on this planet which takes pride in asking Hollywood and United States interests to take a hike in the most public way imaginable. Many more governments could do well to learn that particular idea, even if they don’t need to pick up the other things that the NK government is up to.

The world’s most resilient site for safeguarding freedom of expression, going against the political interests of the United States’ elite cronyists, is now run from North Korea. Imagine that.

This is going to be really fun to watch. The local convenience store may run out of popcorn when this becomes known.

UPDATE: The operators of The Pirate Bay confirm the story in a press release with comments: “This is truly an ironic situation. We have been fighting for a free world, and our opponents are mostly huge corporations from the United States of America, a place where freedom and freedom of speech is said to be held high. At the same time, companies from that country is chasing a competitor from other countries, bribing police and lawmakers, threatening political parties and physically hunting people from our crew. And to our help comes a government famous in our part of the world for locking people up for their thoughts and forbidding access to information.”
Press release here.
PRESS RELEASE, NEW PROVIDER FOR TPB

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE, 3 MARCH 102, 평양 (PYONGYANG).

The Pirate Bay has been hunted in many countries around the world. Not for illegal activities but being persecuted for beliefs of freedom of information. Today, a new chapter is written in the history of the movement, as well as the history of the internets.

A week ago we could reveal that The Pirate Bay was accessed via Norway and Catalonya. The move was to ensure that these countries and regions will get attention to the issues at hand. Today we can reveal that we have been invited by the leader of the republic of Korea, to fight our battles from their network.

This is truly an ironic situation. And to our help comes a government famous in our part of the world for locking people up for their thoughts and forbidding access to information.

We believe that being offered our virtual asylum in Korea is a first step of this country's changing view of access to information. It's a country opening up and one thing is sure, they do not care about threats like others do. In that way, TPB and Korea might have a special bond. We will do our best to influence the Korean leaders to also let their own population use our service, and to make sure that we can help improve the situation in any way we can. When someone is reaching out to make things better, it's also ones duty to grab their hand.
Well, this is roughly seven different kinds of fucked up.

This looks like something cyberpunkish. I'm not sure it's "fucked up" - a DPRK hosting is indeed lawsuit-safe. Also, DPRK is slowly opening up, there's a 3G service going online, so far for foreigners only, but who knows what might happen in the future.

Reddit comments suggest whole NK thing is big troll and the server is really in Germany. No idea if the claims are true or not.

1) Sticking it to America, cuz fuck those guys!
2) Piracy of content or IP is probably accepted by the North Korean government for economic purposes, them being the folks who kidnapped Shin Sang-ok and all. Less effort for them.
They also just actively counterfeit foreign money, very easily solution to generating small amounts of foreign exchange.

I am not a interwebs network expert, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express.
I ran a traceroute on the Pirate Bay and it says it's in Germany.

It seems the pirates are having a good laugh over a barrel of rum. ARRR!!!!

So, PirateBay was just trolling everybody. I thought they'd already been hosted in germany and kicked out.

So for those of us who aren't network gurus, why does all of the IP addresses it's apparently pinging end in that North Korean IP address from the OP?

Because they setup a fake trace path and dicked around with the network settings.

This explains what they did. Everything after Germany is a fake.

That's kind of a lot of effort just to troll everybody? What was the intention here? What does Pirate Bay gain from this besides some shameless publicity?

Ah. Thanks for the info.

Honestly, "shameless publicity" is probably all they were looking for.

Or maybe, just maybe, people who know what they are doing and present serious looking proof are better source than random jerkass speaking out of his arse with no counterargument. Go figure

Have you read Reddit link? People there explain why it can't be NK address and how it works.

Yes I read their press release, i'm just confused as to how they're "opening up information" in NK if they aren't actually hosting anything there.

Because it's a propagandistic profile stunt. Whether or not they and moved, their tone shows you their motive.
