But it would be a step down since the time of the Greeks and has no place in modern times.
I know the context of the codex of Hammurabi, having touched fragments of it myself.

A decision must be made in the life of every nation at the very moment when the grasp of the enemy is at its throat. Then, it seems that the only way to survive is to use the means of the enemy, to rest survival upon what is expedient, to look the other way. Well, the answer to that is 'survival as what'? A country isn't a rock. It's not an extension of one's self. It's what it stands for. It's what it stands for when standing for something is the most difficult! - Chief Judge Haywood

Really? That's cool! What was it like, touching something someone wrote thousands of years ago?I know the context of the codex of Hammurabi, having touched fragments of it myself.

Felt just like any other pottery shard used for landfill in ancient times.

I can't tell whether you're genuinely missing my point, or just refusing to acknowledge it--both options seem unlikely--but some form of communication failure is happening here. I'll try to be more clear. But it would be a step down since the time of the Greeks and has no place in modern times.
My intent was to condemn those people making death threats, or opining that Mr. Pepper Spray should be killed, by pointing out that such a response would be forbidden by a code that's been seen as unjustly harsh for two millenia already.

Re: Officer wins $38k for pepper spraying peaceful protestor
The reason Hammurabi's code is unjustly harsh isn't the reason that executing Pike would be bad. The obvious way in which Hammurabi's code is bad is that it advocates punishing innocent third parties - executing the son instead of the father. Executing Pike is bad because his betrayal of the extraordinary powers and responsibilities that are given to the police, and his use of pepper spray against non-violent protestors, do not warrant his death.Zeropoint wrote:My intent was to condemn those people making death threats, or opining that Mr. Pepper Spray should be killed, by pointing out that such a response would be forbidden by a code that's been seen as unjustly harsh for two millenia already.

Zeropoint is agreeing with the position that death threats are not an appropriate way to respond to a person that has pepper sprayed people and is saying that even Hammurabi would see this.

Thanks, Jub. It's comforting to know that my message has made it to at least ONE person intact! I mean, I feel like I'm communicating clearly, and my posts make sense to ME (partly because I already know what I mean) but with this much misunderstanding, I have to assume that at least part of the problem is on my end. Sorry for the confusion, folks!

I think having to find a new job with this baggage hanging over his head in this economic climate might be punishment enough
