he prime minister said there was a difference between newspapers, which parents could keep away from children, and the internet, where youngsters could "stumble across" legal but hardcore pornography.

clearly he has never allowed his children to enter a newsagent alone.

Sarcasm aside, it genuinely wouldn't surprise me if he hadn't. At least not in a built-up area rather than whatever twee, sanitised Midsomer Norton-minus-the-interesting-murders he calls home when he's not in London.

As a native of Midsomer Norton I take offence at that report.

We've never had an interesting murder.

A local girl did get to be slaughtered in game of thrones but no real life killing happened.

Midsomer Murders is set in a real village?

AFAIK quite a few of those British series are set in real villages, since building that much of a set anywhere would be a lot more costly and there is not that much land around for it.

That's an excellent series, by the way. Always good for a laugh and the comedy is great. The appeal is that it's a lot less serious and gritty than some of the others I've seen.

That's not what 'set in' means in this context. Yes, Midsomer Murders is shot on location in variety of villages. All the place names they use for them though are entirely fictional as far as I know.

Midsomer Murders seems to be set in a fiction county called Midsomer where for some reason all the villages seem to have Midsomer in the name.

Midsomer Norton is a small town which is currently in the county of Bath and North East Somerset (BANES, they didn't think the name through when they renamed it in the 90s (I think, might have been late 80s) it was previously Avon and before that Somersetshire). The town was most likely was named after the river Somer which runs through it (used to flood quite a bit until they put in some prevention stuff in the 70s and 80s). However, the spelling has changed a few times over the years and it might have been Summer at some point (There used to be a Summer fare and also the area was so swampy it could only be crossed at midsummer both of which might be the source of the name).

The area used to be big with coal mining during the 19th and first half of the 20th century, there was some print works after that, I haven't lived their for about 20 years now although I visit quite often, I'm not sure what (if anything) is actually going on there now, although there does seem to be a fair amount of new building, maybe we're a commuter hub now?
