Even as an ardent supporter of the right to choose, I have to say that's a pretty depressing number.

I don't see it as depressing. Even with extremely common usage of contraception, you're going to have slip-ups - and that's not counting the medical issues, non-viable fetuses, and so forth.
If anything, we need to promote this fact against the forced-pregnancy crowd. Abortion is something many women will experience without the type of psychological issues you see said crowd try and promote, not something that only happens with "those people".

I heard a statistic a while ago that claimd that half of all pregnancies were accidental. Now, this didn't distinguish between accidental-accidental where you fucked up and accidental in the sense that the people in a committed relationship stopped using contraception (or it failed) and were more or less fine with having kids but it's still a huge number. That that statistic is true is far more worrying to me than this one.
Contraception would be better but c'est la vie.

While not an evil in and of itself, it's still not a good statistic. Abortion is riskier than contraception use use is. Unfortunately, in America, we neglect preventative care in favor of repair procedures, so this isn't really that surprising. With the ACA and proper education by providers, I'll bet we'll see this statistic drop as long-term contraceptives (The only truly effective ones) come into use more frequently.
