Whelp, last time that happened the Whigs disappeared in one election cycle and we got the Republicans, Lincoln, and the Civil War, not necessarily in that order.Zaune wrote:So what happens when the house of cards comes tumbling down and the Democrats find themselves the only functional political party in the United States?

Now I did a job. I got nothing but trouble since I did it, not to mention more than a few unkind words as regard to my character so let me make this abundantly clear. I do the job. Well, there's a cheerful thought. Doubly so with the way some 'conservatives' in the South have gone from trying to downplay the Cornerstone Speech to outright slavery apologism
There are hardly any excesses of the most crazed psychopath that cannot easily be duplicated by a normal kindly family man who just comes in to work every day and has a job to do.

There's no way to downplay the Cornerstone Address without looking like a goddamned fool. At any rate, the American Civil War isn't about to repeat itself. There might be a militia insurrection at some point, but the Army isn't divided with general officers mostly loyal to their home states rather than the federal government like it was then, so it won't get the military support it needs to be effective or long-lasting.Zaune wrote:Well, there's a cheerful thought. Yes, but how bloody or long-lasting does a militia insurrection have to be to bugger up the US economy as thoroughly as the government shutdown we just barely averted not so long ago?

A simple insurrection where they "claim" a portion of Nevada won't harm the economy very much (if at all). If they form a militia brigade and capture a few small towns, they would be defeated in short order. If they resort to terrorist bombings and assassinations in major cities across the country and keep it up for a period of months or years...then that could be crippling if left unchecked.Zaune wrote:Yes, but how bloody or long-lasting does a militia insurrection have to be to bugger up the US economy as thoroughly as the government shutdown we just barely averted not so long ago?
Thing is though, are there really enough assholes in this country to pull off something like that?

It's also worth noting that when the Whigs disappeared, the Democrats were the party of Southern slaveholding and agrarian interests, and Democrats were behind the secessions. If the Republican party collapses, it won't be analogous because in the case of the Civil War, the party in whose tent the troublemakers resided was the one that didn't collapse.

Re: Republican "solutions" for phantom menaces
I doubt the Republicans will collapse soon... there's enough corporations interested in keeping Republicans in Congress, so they'll probably continue to chug along mostly as pesky obstructionists while remaining unable to win national elections for at least the next two election cycles, unless they figure out how to resurrect Lincoln or something. That's anothing problem - they have nothing like the "Star Power" of Obama or Hillary Clinton. John McCain was probably their best "brand name" candidate, and he turned into an asshole and selected a total idiot as his running mate. Colin Powell was another "star" they had, but he fizzled out after promoting tons of faulty intelligence. And all of the more prominent new-comers like Jindal et. al are just Tea Party idiots who have zero chance of winning a national election.Zaune wrote:So what happens when the house of cards comes tumbling down and the Democrats find themselves the only functional political party in the United States?

The second the acronym agencies even get a whiff of something organised about to kick off, said agencies will start leaving boots wedged up assholes. It's not a comforting thought, but an amusing one on some levels. I would probably get a dark chuckle at packs of country boys and other assorted idiots playing soldier against the DHS in the woods.Zaune wrote:Yes, but how bloody or long-lasting does a militia insurrection have to be to bugger up the US economy as thoroughly as the government shutdown we just barely averted not so long ago?

Not to mention Colin Powell got thrown under the bus and probably isn't up for doing the Republican Party any favors these days.Channel72 wrote:I doubt the Republicans will collapse soon... there's enough corporations interested in keeping Republicans in Congress, so they'll probably continue to chug along mostly as pesky obstructionists while remaining unable to win national elections for at least the next two election cycles, unless they figure out how to resurrect Lincoln or something.
