linkA NURSE was arrested for killing as many as 38 patients because she found them or their relatives annoying, police said.
Daniela Poggiali, a 42-year-old resident of the Italian town of Lugo, was taken into custody over the weekend and booked for the alleged slaying of 78-year-old patient Rosa Calderoni, who died from an injection of potassium.
Calderoni had been admitted to the hospital with a routine illness before she died unexpectedly.
Tests showed she died with a high amount of potassium, which can provoke cardiac arrest, in her bloodstream, according to the Central European News.
Her death triggered an investigation, which found that 38 others had died mysteriously while Poggiali was on duty, the news agency reported.
One of Poggiali’s fellow nurses described her as a "cold person but always eager to work", according to CEN.
Another one of Poggiali’s colleagues said the accused nurse was once reported for giving powerful laxatives to patients at the end of her shift to make work tougher for nurses working after her.

Ah, another one. We had a case like that here a couple of years ago, with some old bitch who got her kicks out of murdering patients. Serial killer and the modus operandi exactly the same as Poggiali.dragon wrote:wow that's a lot of people.

And that's why it's considered best practice to audit the death certificates every once in a while.
There are hardly any excesses of the most crazed psychopath that cannot easily be duplicated by a normal kindly family man who just comes in to work every day and has a job to do.

There was also a case over here, a nurse sentenced to life imprisonment for four murders and three attempted murders -- except it was all bullshit, the case was retried, the deaths were ruled natural after all, and the nurse was exonerated. Turns out it's easy to misconstrue the deaths of ill people as murder in cases where their bodies produce overabundances of bad stuff that looks like poison as a side-product of their illness. So I'll wait for more information, and frankly I think the word 'allegedly' belongs in the thread title too.

Well honestly, the lesson here is don't be a fucking cock to people that are taking care of you.
And at least she had a sense of humor with the laxatives and all.
Man, I know I shouldn't find any of this funny, but I do. My apologies in advance to anyone it pisses off.

And Havok, how the elderly treat those who care for them isn't always a matter of choice. Dementia does strange things to peoples' behaviour.
Re: Italien nurse kills 38 people
Oh I know, but how many patients were killed because their perfectly fine relatives were being cocks? It's like the old saying goes, don't fuck with the people that prepare your food. It should apply doubly here, because as we can see, you never fucking know.

Unfortunately cases like this do tend to pop up every now and then. Health care is one profession where you have an unique access to the life and well-being of the people in your care, and regrettably some see fit to abuse that.
It's a strange world. Let's keep it that way.
Re: Italien nurse kills 38 people
I initially read this as an actual injection of elemental potassium. Boy, I thought, I don't know how you'd manage to cover that up as natural causes. Of course you'd have a hell of a time trying to inject a metal with a syringe. Unless you alloy it with sodium, apparently this results in a liquid alloy.Daniela Poggiali, a 42-year-old resident of the Italian town of Lugo, was taken into custody over the weekend and booked for the alleged slaying of 78-year-old patient Rosa Calderoni, who died from an injection of potassium.

Families are asses all the time. We tell ourselves that they are in shock, grief, denial and don't know what they are doing . But some people are just assholes regardless of what's going on.Havok wrote:Oh I know, but how many patients were killed because their perfectly fine relatives were being cocks? Not that you should kill people for being assholes, or because their kids/family are assholes.

Re: Italien nurse kills 38 people
Most likely it was potassium chloride, but it could also have been potassium phosphate. Both are used regularly in hospitals, although I don't know how easy it is for potassium phosphate to be lethal. Potassium chloride is regularly used during cardiac bypass surgery to stop and start the heart. So a high dose can certainly cause a heart attack. Concentrated potassium also burns like a mother. I got some on a paper cut once and it stung plenty. Even properly diluted it can be very irritating to blood vessels when given.Korvan wrote:I initially read this as an actual injection of elemental potassium. How do they manage the irritation during the surgeries?Even properly diluted it can be very irritating to blood vessels when given.

I'm not a doctor, but I'd imagine that patients undergoing a cardiac bypass surgery with their hearts being started and stopped are already a pretty good distance beyond irritated.Borgholio wrote:How do they manage the irritation during the surgeries?Even properly diluted it can be very irritating to blood vessels when given.

Yup, anesthesia and dose. Getting a Lactated ringer (IV FLUIDS) will get you some potassium as well. Heck, most people on diuretics eat a potassium pill a day as well. It's all in the dose.

Small amounts of lidocaine is often added to fluids with potassium chloride in them to deal with the irritation.Borgholio wrote:How do they manage the irritation during the surgeries?Even properly diluted it can be very irritating to blood vessels when given.

1. Use a bigger IV line eg a central venous catheterBorgholio wrote:How do they manage the irritation during the surgeries?Even properly diluted it can be very irritating to blood vessels when given.
2. Infuse it at a slower rate (although that will depend on the clinical situation. Sometimes you just need it in pretty fast).
