Welsh Election Results 2016

Post by madd0ct0r »

Becuase we're a real country dangnabbit :)

The Welsh Election is interesting, despite potentially record low turnout(1). This is because we have more parties, it's a knife edge election and the voiting system alone is amusing. Also, between Scottish independece, tory whitehall fuckwittery and the risk of Brexit, the Welsh Goverment may find itself moving down the devo path to full independence much faster than the last decade.

It's a mixed member system. So just like the UK general elections, there's a first pass the post for 40 constituencies to elect 40 out of 60 members. That's one ballot form. One of the parties genuinely has a hammer and sickle as their logo.
The other 20 members are elected from the regional lists. There's five regions, so 4 members come from each region based on the proportional vote (using d'hondt/jefferson system to round up). You get a ballot form for your regional list. The effect is significant. Last election the Tories got 14 seats in the assembly, 8 of them through the regional proportional votes.

Now, interesting parties. Last time Labour held a single seat majority in the assembly. This time will probably be a coalition. the exit polls suggested Labour would win 27 seats - three fewer than 2011 - with Plaid Cymru second with 12 seats, the Conservatives with 11, UKIP winning eight and the Liberal Democrats two.(2)
I voted green as ever, and i live in hope of the regional list triggering a Green Assembly Member.
Plaid Cymru are the welsh nationalist party. Friends of The Earth actually scored their manifesto higher than the Greens! So it's a land of proud hippies, basically. Plaid and the Greens have pledged to campaign for each other where they are not in direct competition.

First results due 0200. It's 2300 here and I'm off to bed.

Principality, surely not country. :P

The rest of us in the UK have had some variety of local elections as well. Just had the most pointless position of Police and Crime Commissioner up for the vote here. To me that sounds like they commission crime.

Anyway! Wales! What have you got devolved to you? And do you do what the scots do and vote for one thing for them and then the opposite for the english? :P

And who is likely to go into coalition with Labour then? Is Plaid Cymru's platform compatible with their's?

Didn't you lot have an election on staying in the EU today? Or is that another day this year?
It's a strange world. Let's keep it that way.

I think London Mayor elections were today too.

Welsh Powers:

Devolved areas[edit]
The National Assembly for Wales has the competence to pass bills for Acts of the Assembly in 20 "Subjects" outlined in schedule 7 of the Government of Wales Act 2006.[27]
Those subjects are:
Agriculture, fisheries, forestry and rural development
Ancient monuments and historic buildings
Culture
Economic development
Education and training
Environment
Fire and rescue services and promotion of fire safety
Food
Health and health services
Highways and transport
Housing
Local government
Public administration
Social welfare
Sport and recreation
Tourism
Town and country planning
Water and flood defence

Obviously the big one missing is income raising (although that miht change http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-politics-34910531). Wales is funded by some money doled out grudgingly from Whitehall (or lavishly promised in a general election year). It's not as generous as the Scottish deal is. A MAJOR source of capital investment is EU funding, especially in transport infrastructure.

It can also creativley interpreted. The tory goverment was looking to pass a bill to reduce the power of the trade unions. The Welsh Sennedd toom the argument that that shouldn't apply to Wales as it would fuck up agreements they have the the unions in education and health services, both of which are devolved. It was shaping up to be an interesting fight, but then the House of Lords killed the bill instead.

Well, the land of my father has gone all UKIP-y. That's a turn up. And Labour losing Rhondda is pretty stunning.

The Tories have also made a comeback in Scotland. An odd evening. Hoping for some resemblance of normality to be restored in London later today. We'll see how well the risible smear campaign against Sadiq Khan worked.

Labour lost Rhondda? I did not expect that. Who took it?

Happy that we ignored the race/religion-bating by Goldsmith.

Looks like Labour have won more London Assembly seats as well.

It's a little thing but my police commissioner changed hands from Tory to Labour. And this is a safe Tory seat so far as MPs go. Of course it was only 23% turn out but still. I feel like my vote actually mattered for a change.

Why should it matter what party your police commissioner is? Just vote for the guy who is the most qualified.

Indeed, it's silly that it's even an elected position if you ask me. Though for Commissioner all their statements said basically the same thing 'stop cyber crime, more bobbies on the beat, you'll be safer with me! etc etc'

Because they're all about equally unqualified unless a retired judge or senior police oficer is running, and some of the political parties running for it looked like they wished Driving While Black was an actual arrestable offence.

Ours didn't change. Which, y'know on the one hand he hasn't fixed the most broken and corrupt force in the country yet, but on the other hand the other choices were Tory, Kipper or off-brand BNP, none of whom were likely to fix any of the problems either. (To be fair, it's not far off bad enough that they considered scrapping the whole force and merging the surrounding areas)

Oh, good grief... Please tell me this blogger I'm fond of is mistaken, and Neil "Cash for Questions" Hamilton didn't really get into the Welsh Assembly.

He did indeed, as did Mark Reckless. Between that bunch of wazzocks doing well in Wales, and the captive breeding programme making great strides with the lesser-spotted Scottish Tory. .... it's all going a bit topsy-Turvey.
