Illinois Future Energy Jobs Bill

Post by FireNexus »

Exelon has been trying to get a compromise clean energy bill similar to the one in New York passed in Illinois to avoid the early closure of the Clinton and Quad Cities nuclear plants they operate. Because of the low price of gas, and the failure of legislatures to reward the zero carbon electricity generated by nuclear power, those plants are uncompetitive in electricity supply markets. Exelon is the biggest nuclear generation company in the US, and they've stated they'LL have to scale back in Illinois through early closures without some relief. The NY plants were saved by the NY compromise, and they've actually agreed to buy another plant in NY that was in danger of closing as well.

If you live in Illinois and support continued nuclear power as a climate protection measure, please visit http://futureenergyjobsbill.com/ and express support for the measure.

*Full disclosure: Exelon Utilities is my employer. I have no direct stake in the nuclear issue relating to that because of the wall between generation and distribution, but I'm sure I'd benefit from a more profitable umbrella company due to the way bonuses are issued. I support this measure, though, because I've long supported policies which help nuclear generation compete.
I had a Bill Maher quote here. But fuck him for his white privelegy "joke".

All the rest? Too long.

I live in the area served by Exelon's nuclear plant in Byron, so consider it supported.
