Honestly I feel kinda bad for the poor bastard. He should have done more but unlike Paterno he at least made some effort to do the right thing. Curley Schultz Spanier and Paterno were worse

Guy sees a child in the shower with an adult, reports it to his boss (as opposed to some sort of police), his big punishment is that he doesn't get to be a star athlete, and you feel bad for the guy?

I do feel sort of bad for him because I think he thought something would be done. I mean yeah, he fucked up big, and that pedophile raped who knows how many other children before someone finally did the correct thing, but I think some of that is really jock culture. You see your coach as the be all, end all and if he didn't do anything then maybe you were worried about nothing. But at the same time if the worst thing that happened to him for his serious, damage causing error in judgement is that he doesn't get to play pro football then he's in a better position than he probably should be.

This is the oddest thing I've read in a while. How conditioned are these child athletes that as adults they act like this?

Indeed. I find it odd that his big punishment is that he's treated like one of the plebes. :P

I wasn't ever really into organized sports, mainly it would be just some of us playing basketball or baseball. But the Junior and Senior HS football players were treated like royalty and the coaches like gods. So you have this culture of "if I need something or have a concern I go to the head coach and he takes it from there". It's sad, but true.

I have a lot more sympathy for the guy, he came forward, was submitted to months and years of mob fans causing psychological terror and threatening him, had his career ruined and has essentially no job prospects.

So he deserves to get the money in my book because in the insane culture of Penn State he was the only one who had the integrity to do something.

Yeah, I don't have a problem with the guy getting awarded money for the reasons you mentioned. But I can't say I sympathize. Empathize, yeah. I can only imagine that he reported the incident expecting something to be done, but when nothing happened he should have gone to authorities.

The really fucked up thing? I'm not sure they would've done much based on his report just because of the culture. I mean they are local or campus police, you think they are going to go after one of their golden gods? But he didn't. I can understand why, but I can't excuse it.

If you'll pardon an anecdote:

When I worked security back in FL I was moved to a slower paced lobby with less responsibility to give me a break after being gutted over a misdiagnosis. One of the daily things was signing in a group of mentally handicapped workers from Easter Seals who would come in to do some work moving boxes and stuff like that.

When signing them out one day a guy with Downs Syndrome began trying to force a woman with a disability that effectively gave her the mind of a child to put her hand down his pants and she was crying. I had no idea what to do. For 10 seconds that felt like an hour I was frozen in pure disbelief and then told him to stop immediately and that it was on camera. I ended up writing a report because it was the right thing to do and luckily the situation was dealt with and the Downs guy was not allowed back to the site and they added another chaperone so one could monitor them while the other got the van they used to transport them and I was praised for doing a good job.

But looking back, I think I should have reported the incident to the authorities. It would have cost me my job, which is fucked up, but I did what the company that paid me wanted me to do rather than the morally correct thing to do and at the time thought I did the right thing. I don't think I did.

It's "funny" because COMPTIA actually covers this. You work on people's computers and their file servers. You will see things. I've found so. much... stuff. Thankfully, only one time was it actually illegal.

Anyways, an e-mail discussion between two adulterers. What do you do? Nothing. Fix the problem, leave. (which is weird because adultery is still illegal in some states). You find child pornography. What do you do? Call the police. Not your boss, not your customer: no one but the police. This was kind of "pushed" back in the 2000s. But now, it's slammed into the curriculum and it should be.

But it damn well could cost you your job, among other things if you have to testify (I dodged the responsibility of that once, even after reporting it). And considering the dim view America seems to take on whistle blowers, I can see it being a rough call to make. I've got backups, I've got a support net, but I can understand the hesitation from people who don't.

Well it was official policy that as security "officers" (it's guards, don't fancy it up  ) we were to OBSERVE AND REPORT. Period. So I actually broke company policy by stopping that guy from further molesting the poor woman. But they let it slide because it "worked out". Honestly at the time I was kind of oblivious and really thought I was doing the right thing. But 10-11 years on... Not so much.

The child porn example is actually interesting in that a guard who was friends with the "domestic abuse guard" who I despised and I guess the feeling was mutual, not that I cared what scum like that think about anything, tried to fuck me over. He relieved me for my break and I didn't sign out of the computer because it was so slow it would take 5 minutes to log back in. Don't do that. Because he went under my login to some kiddie porn site trying to get me in deep shit.

Being a moron, he didn't consider the fact that to verify who it was actually using the PC (which was time stamp synchronized with the lobby cameras) the IT guys who I was friends with immediately checked the video and the asshole pervert fucking scum got fired. No police, just fired. This was in 2005 or 2006, so they didn't want scandal and just deleted it all.

Policy or not: They actually can't force you to do that, nor is it technically legal for them to punish you for contacting law enforcement. Just like your company can't tell you "don't call OSHA if you see an illegal safety issue, call us." You're required by law to report them to authorities.

However, like you said: being a decent person can land you in the unemployment line. Just like reporting your scumbag boss to OSHA can't get you fired for that (it's actionable), you can be relegated to shit work or less work until you finally quit. Or they pile on you till your performance drops and they lay you off.

RIGHT TO WORK FTW!

The administrator password for this site was blank. As in, there was no admin password. Nor were there user passwords. They tried to get me to testify against the guy, but with no passwords, no logging, no nothing (that I had attempted numerous times IN WRITING to get them to change) there was nothing I could do. The prosecutor stopped talking to me when he found out I wouldn't "play ball," read: "lie."

The guy could have been guilty, but ANYONE with physical access to his PC could have downloaded that stuff. They could have checked EXIF and download times on the files, but you can fake that. I also wasn't trolling through fucking kiddie porn for it. I'm not fucking law enforcement and I'm not voluntarily staring at that shit. I was making like $8.75 an hour at the time. I told my boss: "You don't pay me enough to do that."

I don't even think it was legal for my boss or the prosecutor to ask me to do it.

Even back then, that's a crime. And your IT guy is at legally at fault if he didn't report it to authorities. We actually had a talk about this at our company. Our titles changed from "Network Administrator" to "IT Specialist" and "IT Technician" due to legal reasons. An Administrator is responsible for what goes down on the network. Technicians and Specialist have deniability.

Not saying I disagree with the actions of your IT buddy, just pointing it out.

What they would have done was moved me to another site doing graveyard shift since I was a contractor.

When that scum came here and posted child porn in every thread I was physically ill for a solid week. I don't know how cops that specialize in that area do it.

As far as the IT guys, they were told that they had to do it, and that was by the head asshole who ran the site. I didn't find out about it until 3 days after the fact because my days off started like 2 hours after he did it. Honestly, I was just grateful they didn't drop the hammer on me.

Depends how much he actually saw and heard, I guess. Just being in the same room as a teenage boy while he's getting changed doesn't prove misconduct all by itself, and as someone who's been on the wrong end of something damn close to a false rape accusation myself*, I can't really fault someone for not wanting to speak out unless they're very sure of their facts.

* To make a long story short, I have a distant cousin I've never met with the same last name and a similar birthdate who's done time for attempted rape. There was a paperwork SNAFU that took several days and an angry letter to my MP to straighten out. I don't want to talk about it.
There are hardly any excesses of the most crazed psychopath that cannot easily be duplicated by a normal kindly family man who just comes in to work every day and has a job to do.

He saw Sandusky naked in the shower raping the kid.

Sandusky was subsequently charged with raping several boys and convicted. But it was long after this guy saw what he saw.

The article says he broke up the incident by slamming the locker door; also people in the comments pointed out that attacking in the shower may not have been a smart move. McQueary was weak but he did more than paterno

I wasn't aware that he stopped it. So the points for that reduce the deficit. I agree that attacking Sandusky wouldn't have been smart. I'd have done it, though. But I'm not the sharpest knife in the drawer when it comes to pedophiles given my history.
