How do you tell if news is fake or bias?

Post by mr friendly guy »

Since fake news is in vogue, I thought I would start a topic where board members post tips on what makes them suspicious that a story is fake. I feel having an educated populace is a better way of dealing with this, then apps to get rid of fake news. Note, just because they have these features, doesn't mean its automatically fake. It just means that maybe we should look deeper into the story. Point 2, fake in this case I will be referring not just to stories which are made out of thin air, but stories which are also inaccurate in regards to the actual event.

I will start

1. The more extraordinary the claim, the more extraordinary the evidence has to be.

An oldie and a goodie which we routinely used to counter evidence for miracles. A story about Donald Trump saying something really outrageous, would help if there is a video or audio recording of him saying it (which there are).

2. The use of emotive language

Language that tries to get you riled up. I don't mean to generalise, but this might be a bit harder for Americans to see on television, compared to say Australia, or BBC. The few times I have seen US news, a lot of it seems sensationalised by Australian standards. That automatically makes me suspicious. Australian news by comparison, seems dry.

Now in printed media its a bit harder as there are less cues to follow, unlike on television where you can see and hear the journalists sarcasm. But there are a few terms with connotations or very emotive language, which people use rather than a standard more neutral term. For example, the word infanticide for abortion (not that it is accurate, but anyway).

3. Check the original source

Very useful for science based stories. Potholer 54 on youtube does a great job with climate change deniers. He follows the source and finds they say the opposite of what the article claims.

Another case of be suspicious is if they link to a source in another language. Some countries now publish in English to get their POV out. Russia and China do this. So when they say Chinese government says x, but they don't link to a source in English, (when Chinese publish in English, Mandarin, Arabic, French and Spanish), I get very suspicious. Especially when I find an article published by Chinese news media in English saying the opposite. **

** The above was in reference to law the Chinese government supposedly announced. So if government's own mouthpieces and everyone of them announces the law inaccurately, either Western news are lying, or the CCP's own mouthpieces are all incompetent they really say the opposite of the government tells them to say.

4. Ask yourself if you were a journalist, what you want to know

A lot of the time, the narrative is deceptive by what they don't put in. For example when two countries have dispute, I want to know why? Saying they have territorial disputes is only the tip of the iceberg. I want to know what is the historical basis of this.

5. The 3 D's

Coined by Israel's defenders, however its useful for anything really and can even be used against Israel.

a ) Double standard
b) demonisation (which feeds in with point 2 I raised)
c) Delegitimisation

If you want to go a bit deeper, do a whoislookup of the site/source of the claim. Geektools have a nice one at http://geektools.com/whois.php.

One site could be conservativedailypost.com.

This site was registered at the end of May and has been online only a few months. Owner of the domain is withheld, so you can't know who that is. This is very suspicious, as a good news site would most likely exist for years and would not hide its owner.

Also, if you look at the site, will they have normal news as well, or just clickbait?

I wouldn't say that legimate news site has to be years old (after all everyone those pre-existing sites had to start at some point) but I'd suspect that site wanting to be legimate would start of cautious and conservative in their actions (using a non-political defination of "conservative" that is) in an effort to make a name for themselves are reliable, while a fake site or a site conserned in preaching a message would post what poorly (if not at all) researched clickbait trash that supported their agenda (even if that agenda was just to make loads of cash for themselves) regardless of their age.

I'd say one good sign of fake or bias site would be non-existant or unclear sources.

Sometimes the site can just leave out important information that puts things in their proper context. Breitbart did a hitpiece on Obama recently for doing away with a registration program for foreign entrants into the country. Didn't bother mentioning that there's more effective programs in place for monitoring comings and goings and then makes a sweeping statement that this somehow makes us unsafe.

6. Go look on Wikileaks in the Podesta files to see if the reporter had contact with John Podesta. :D

Do some basic research into the site, pretty easy to see the if the company also runs 'RightWingLooney.com' as well as the site you're reading. Check the sources, if the site is talking about how Obama killed a guy in Kentucky, go find a local Kentucky paper and see what they say.
They say, "the tree of liberty must be watered with the blood of tyrants and patriots." I suppose it never occurred to them that they are the tyrants, not the patriots. Those weapons are not being used to fight some kind of tyranny; they are bringing them to an event where people are getting together to talk. -Mike Wong

But as far as board culture in general, I do think that young male overaggression is a contributing factor to the general atmosphere of hostility. It's not SOS and the Mess throwing hand grenades all over the forum- Red

I'd note too that if it is a news site, rather than a newspaper that has a website, it is more likely to be dodgy (although of course there are dodgy newspapers too).

I don't need to check fake news.

I need to watch mainstream news and read mainstream sources of information carefully and with a critical eye. Nothing can escape critical dissection.

For example, I find a story about a 10-year-old company that has amassed assets exceeding 7 billion dollars being led by a 30-year-old. The company is not in the tech sector, but in ultra-high-value real estate. Said person is claimed to be a philantropist and a good guy, "man of the year" of a certain region and overall a successful "self made man".

A cursory understanding of how things work in this market leads me to dig just a bit deeper. The person is accused of corruption and bribery and was in court. The person is friends with several very influential oligarchs and a member of a closed oligarch club.

Just a small example of how you don't need much more than mainstream news and a critical eye.

Lì paludi, minacce, cecchini coi fucili, documenti, file notturne e clandestini
Qui incontri, lotte, passi sincronizzati, colori, capannelli non autorizzati,
Uccelli migratori, reti, informazioni, piazze di Tutti i like pazze di passioni...

I ran a machine learning model for fun on it. That said, the most effective method isn't NLP, it's a blacklist of known sites and domains known for nonsense.
Remind me to dig up the features I generated for at least one dataset from Kaggle.
