Yet another mass shooting: Dayton, Ohio '19

Dayton shooting: What we know

Nine people were killed and 26 injured after a shooter opened fire in a busy area in the Oregon District of Dayton, Ohio.

Here is what we know:

Nine people are dead and 16 injured after the shooting at 1:22 a.m. ET.
The shooter is also dead.
Police officers were in the area when the shooting started and killed the shooter in "less than a minute," according to the authorities.
The shooter was wearing body armor, used a “.223 high-capacity” gun and had additional magazines with him, according to Dayton mayor Nan Whaley.
Link.

Still unfolding but a single shooter unloaded with an AR-15 or similar rifle, then got popped before he could do more harm since he didn't wait for the cops to clear out before starting. I guess that's a silver lining of sorts. August 3/4 is a bleak day for America.

I wonder at what point shootings with double digit casualties will just become routine (shootings with single digit casualties already largely seem to have done so). Just an accepted part of every day life in America, even if we don't like it, like car crashes or heart attacks.

Lots of responses from Democratic leaders pushing for a renewed effort on gun control after the last couple of days, though nobody seems to be making the connection to white supremacy and domestic terrorism in El Paso. Gun control is probably going to be front and center in the campaign now, and in the next debate.

Any word on motive for the Ohio shooting?

Seven Wounded In Shooting Near Playground on Chicago's West Side
Seven people were wounded in a shooting Sunday as they gathered in Douglas Park on the West Side.

At about 1:20 a.m. Sunday, a group was standing in the park in the 2900 block of West Roosevelt Road when someone opened fire from a black Camaro, Chicago police said.

A 21-year-old man was hit in the groin and taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in critical condition, police said. A woman, 25, was struck in the arm, leg and taken to the same hospital where her condition was stabilized

Another woman, 22, was also hit and taken to Mount Sinai, police said. Her condition was stabilized.

A 20-year-old man and a woman, 19, were taken to Stroger Hospital, police said. The man was hit in the right side of the body and the woman was struck in the leg. Their conditions were stabilized.

Two men, 23 and 21, took themselves to Mount Sinai with gunshot wounds, police said.

People were seen walking in the park just past the perimeter of the crime scene tape with their phone lights activated looking for things they left behind as they ran from the bullets.

Taken from Robert Reich's Facebook page. Pretty much says it all.

And the aptly named House Minority Leader Representative McCarthy (R-Russia) and other top Republicans have quickly fallen back on the ever-reliable old "ITS TEH VIDEO GAMEZ" deflection:

https://www.huffingtonpost.ca/entry/sho ... 604e339cc9
The top Republican in the House expressed concern about the influence of video games following the two deadly mass shootings in El Paso, Texas and Dayton, Ohio over the weekend.

“The idea of these video games, they dehumanize individuals to have a game of shooting individuals and others,” House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) said in an interview on Fox News on Sunday.

At least nine people were killed and scores more injured in a mass shooting in Dayton, Ohio, early Sunday morning ― less than 24 hours after a gunman entered a Walmart in El Paso, Texas, and killed at least 20 people.

Police are investigating whether the suspected shooter in El Paso, a 21-year white man arrested at the scene, was motivated by a hatred of Hispanic people. A four-page manifesto that he may have posted on social media shortly before the killings described the attack as a response to the “Hispanic invasion of Texas.” Federal officials announced Sunday they are treating the El Paso massacre as an act of domestic terrorism and that the suspect may face hate crime charges.

The manifesto also reportedly included a brief reference to the first-person shooter video game “Call of Duty.”

McCarthy was asked on Fox News to respond to comments earlier in the day on the network by Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick, a fellow Republican who called for federal action targeting the video game industry.

“I’ve always felt that is a problem for future generations and others,” McCarthy said. Studies have “shown before what it does to individuals. When you look at these photos of how (the El Paso shooting) took place, you can see the actions within video games and others.”

Republicans have long insisted on a link between violent video games and mass shootings. Despite McCarthy’s comments, studies on the matter have been less than conclusive.

Researchers at the University of Oxford in England, for example, reported earlier this year that they found no relationship between aggressive behavior in teenagers and the amount of time spent playing violent video games. Moreover, other nations where video games are just as prevalent don’t experience nearly the same amount of gun violence as the U.S. does.

As Democrats reacted to the weekend’s violence by stressing the need for more laws tightening gun control, acting White House chief of staff Mick Mulvaney argued more needed to be done to address the connection between mass violence and social media.

“Are we going to talk about the role of guns? Certainly, we are. But to think that this is just a gun issue that many people make it out to be is not right,” Mulvaney said Sunday on ABC’s “This Week.”
Targeting guns? Unacceptable! An absolute right to bear arms is guaranteed by the Constitution! (even though it isn't).

Targeting video games? Just fine. Its not like freedom of expression in the media is protected in the Constitution...

The whole world plays first-person shooters.
Most of the world has access to guns.
Only the US has mass shootings on a weekly basis.

But that's just fake news, I guess...
A minute's thought suggests that the very idea of this is stupid. A more detailed examination raises the possibility that it might be an answer to the question "how could the Germans win the war after the US gets involved?" - Captain Seafort, in a thread proposing a 1942 'D-Day' in Quiberon Bay

So, Trump's chief propagandist Keyllyanne Conway has tried to run some cover for Trump on the El Paso shooting via Whataboutism, by claiming that the shooer had a pro-Leftist Twitter feed and trying to link Elizabeth Warren to the shooting:

https://www.rawstory.com/2019/08/kellya ... -massacre/
Kellyanne Conway is suggesting the Dayton gunman’s left-wing views motivated his mass shooting that killed nine people, including his sister — but she’s facing a strong pushback.

The White House adviser claimed on Fox News that Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) may share some blame for the killings, because the 24-year-old gunman had expressed support for her presidential campaign on social media, and she shared a CNN report about his political views.

— Kellyanne Conway (@KellyannePolls) August 6, 2019

Daily Beast politics editor Sam Stein called attention to Conway’s post, and she quickly suggested he was blowing her tweet out of proportion.

“Me sharing @CNN story without comment bothers you, @samstein?” Conway tweeted.

Stein responded by asking her to explain why she’d posted the story.

“Not bothered. confused,” he tweeted. “It suggests that you believe his motive was political. Do you? If so, what information do you have to support that. And while I have you. I can’t seem to find the instance of you sharing a story about the El Paso gunman’s motivations. Can you explain why?”

Not bothered. confused. It suggests that you believe his motive was political. Do you? If so, what information do you have to support that.

And while I have you. I can’t seem to find the instance of you sharing a story about the El Paso gunman’s motivations. Can you explain why?

— Sam Stein (@samstein) August 6, 2019

Conway did not immediately respond to Stein’s questions, but other Twitter users seemed to agree she was blaming the Massachusetts Democrat for the Dayton shooting to remove some blame for another shooting, in El Paso, from President Donald Trump’s shoulders.

The El Paso white supremacy terrorist was definitely inspired by Kellyanne’s boss and his xenophobic rhetoric, yet Kellyanne still happily works for him.

This is a piss poor attempt at whataboutism.#TrumpIsAStochasticTerrorist

The biggest lie republicans ever told is in saying that 2 wrongs make a right when 90% of the time their side is proven wrong, proven lying, proven discriminatory and racist. Yet when proof comes for you it is denial, blame, and unwarranted finger pointing.

Listen carefully: In case you are not bright enough to discern the difference, no one on the left in public office is standing up and inciting violence, or describing immigrants as an invasion. Your overlord is CLEARLY in a class of inciting that is unique and very troublesome.

— Ann (@alf27900) August 6, 2019

Did he post a left-wing manifesto 20 mins before the shooting? Did he target conservatives? STFU with your "both sides-ism." We see you clearly

— Laurie Banks (@LaurieBanks) August 6, 2019

Still finger pointing I see. Is this the White House’s idea of “urging unity“?

— Jeffrey (@gocubsgo0) August 6, 2019

So what !! He was already had a history of threatening "classmates" in high school. He is a perfect example of someone who never should be allowed to buy an assault weapon. He cost lives due to Republicans incompetence.

— Roosevelt's Republican (@tialisa1974) August 6, 2019

Now do the El Paso shooter

— Trish Reilly (@trishreilly17) August 6, 2019

Have Warren and Sanders been calling for high school students to have hit lists and refusing to enact any measures to make it harder to buy weapons of war and body armor?

— Art Martin (@gartmartin9) August 6, 2019
Because Warren has totally spent the last few years blocking gun control, blatantly inciting bigotry and violence and defending those who commit it. Oh, wait, that was just Donald being Donald.
