Woot! I'm so happy to be proven wrong. I feared that Baghdad would turn into a meat grinder because of all the resistence faced in the desert. Those must have been the only troops he had that were worth a damn.
Now I hope I'll be proven wrong again and Iraq will become a functioning democracy. It's actually not far-fetched this time. The world's eye is on the U.S. and we can really help PR by turning Iraq around, so there's an incentive. And it was already secular and fairly progressive for the region.

I definately concur. Now we have reason to throw things at anti-war demonstrators. Any protest from here on out will just be stupid. Stupidity deserves to be punished.Arthur_Tuxedo wrote:Woot! Is it cool to claim an atheist jihad on stupid people? Because I think that's where we should be headed next.

Funny you should say that. Some moron put a sign up for an anti-war protest scheduled for April 12 on the computer lab door. I wanted to put a sign saying the pro-war was quicker, but I doubt I'd get approval. Damn stupid ass lefties (note - not all lefties are stupid asses, but ones at my college are).
Artillery. Its what's for dinner.

Well, let's see... Maybe Bush will listen this time! I mean, hey, it's not like his troops are so far in that they can't pull out, right?Arrow Mk84 wrote:Funny you should say that. ::Sighs:: You have to wonder if protestors even read the newspapers anymore...

From a practical standpoint, democracies are also the most viable trading partners. I really don't see a reason not to make Iraq one. The thing is that if we're serious about it we're going to have to commit to occupying Iraq for several years to get the infrastructure and supporting civil society restored so that democracy can run properly. A pity Mac isn't still around - But we've learned the lessons of rebuilding both Germany and Japan, and to compensate for the diversity of Iraq, we have opposition groups ready to aide us (and exiles with knowledge of western democracy).Arthur_Tuxedo wrote:Woot! Democracies seldom, if ever start wars. (The current war is actualy the previous one, still unresolved, like North Korea.)Democracies don't attack other democracies.
There was a joke in the 80's about Japan wanting to nuke LA.
The government gets multiple phone calls from the richest men in Japan, all saying the same thing."You fucking idiots, I OWN significant chunks of real estate there! Blast LA, and I'm bankrupt! Besides, my buisness won't handle the loss of millions of paying customers."
Wars are BAD for buisness, and when corporate interest influence the government, it is harder to start wars.

Still, we had to learn some hard lessons early on:
1. The M1 Abrams is not invincible.
2. Neither is the AH-64 Apache.
3. Adoption of the M4a1 carbine as the standard issue shoulder-fired weapon may not be such a hot idea after all.
I guess that's one of the benefits of war. It allows a military to identify its weaknesses.

That is not always true. If a foreign government takes actions which are extremely hostile to business interests, wars (or at the very least, destabilizing actions) would be good for business. The Anglo-Iranian oil company in 1953 would be a good example.Emperor Chrostas the Crue wrote:Wars are BAD for buisness, and when corporate interest influence the government, it is harder to start wars.
