'Cuba Lite' blockade planned against NK

Post by Vympel »

go here
It is aimed at increasing pressure on the North Korean regime, and would use American ships stationed in the Pacific region, without mounting a total blockade, which Pyongyang would regard as an act of war.
I wonder. If you stop a nation's ships from conducting trade (be they nuclear weapons or what have you), but it's not a 'traditional' blockade, will NK see it as hair splitting bullshit and an act of war anyway?

It would certainly piss me off if I were in NK's position. I think most countries would consider it an act of war. Will NK openly state that they see it as an act of war?

This plan seems to be testing NK by pushing their buttons a bit. A little on the dangerous side and reminds me of some of the "games" the US and USSR used to play with each other. Something I think we could do without since it is uncertain how mentally stable the leader of NK is.

The Soviets could afford to play with us like that because they knew and we knew that any exchange of nuclear fire would result in the destruction of both nations as political entities. What the hell does North Korea have to gain by fucking with us like this?

Kim Jong-il is playing games with the lives of all of his subjects.

The lunatic is trying to get concessions out of the US, as always.

That's why this plan may actually work. KJ-i is nothing but a bully, and a very idiotic one at that. He kepts being beaten up by all outside his private domains. His worst fear is a confrontation, so we will make all the possible and direst threats only to back down at the last possible moment.

What is needed is a clear, united international voice. It's much more easy to do it in this case than it was in Iraq, since no western power has interests in the country, and KJ-i is by far a worse dictator than Saddam ever was (even at propaganda level). We won't see human shields going to NK.

With no one to turn to, KJ-i will hide like the little rat he is.

Let's just hope that nuclear weapons won't come into the equation...

I'm afraid it will. You see, Kim Jong-il is not only a maniac, he's paranoid too....

The question is, if NK uses nukes, who nukes them back? The US or China? And if China doesn't want NK to be nuked, and we do it anyway, what kind of fun things can we expect?[/code]

I am hazarding to say that both will return fire with a VERY limited tac-nuke strike, if the worst did happen. Just something to take out Kim Jong and his cronies.

Don't worry - the administration is considering actually talking with them now, although another war would be fairly convenient for Bush ;)

North Korea overseas trade is basically SCUD knockoffs with drug smuggling on the side, little loss to the world. However since there ships generally don't have flags, they're far game for anyone. If we conduct a blockade aginst them, its not an act of war.

That would depend on who is hit. China wont fire off anything unless there struck, since they can be sure that any NBC targets would be taken out of the US if the South or Japan was hit.
