The bishop in question is Episcopalian, not Catholic (the American branch of the Anglican Church, which Robin Williams once labelled "Catholic-Lite" —same rituals, half the guilt).

It would have been different had he been Catholic. Being openly gay isn't respectable in a Church where the priests are Men and the altar boys are Scared.

On the final ballot, Robinson received 58 of 77 ballots cast by clergy and 96 of 165 lay votes.

Funny that--the clergy actually voted more unanimously for him than the lay people.
