OTTAWA - MP Svend Robinson was celebrating Wednesday after the House of Commons voted in favour of his private member's bill to extend hate-crimes protection to gays and lesbians.
Bill C-250 passed by a vote of 143-110.
The law carries a penalty of up to five years in prison.
I do believe that's the bill that was mentioned on SD.net a while back that would make certain portions of the Bible 'hate literature', no? Despite the fact that supporters claim it doesn't infringe on religious freedom, it'll be interesting to see what use comes of this when people like Phelps come to town.

Amendment to same: An audio interview on CBC clarifies that the existing legislation doesn't apply to religious beliefs, so the Bible isn't about to be declared hate literature.
He says: "An amendment...states that any opinion which is based in good faith on religious text and the expression of religious beliefs aren't covered by the bill."
