Isn't it the length of the tsunami at sea that makes it dangerous? It can be one metre high but maybe 20 metres long. And when it reach shallow water, all the water in those 20 metres gets pushed together forming a huge wave. Or have I gotten something wrong somewhere?
Is there an equation with which you can calculate the height a wave with a certain height and length would get when it reach the shore?

Mabey, but don't count on it, such a wave has a vast amount of force behind it even if its quite low.GrandAdmiralPrawn wrote:So if I'm near the shore and a three-foot tsunami hits, what will happen to me? I mean, can't I just... hang onto a flagpole or something?

"GrandAdmiralPrawn's upper body strength vs. thousands of tons of moving water?" My money's on the tsunami. here's the report on the aftermath. The wave only washed a few cars away...

How about "GrandAdmiralPrawn's feet, forty inches off the ground, versons tons of moving water, thirty-six inches deep"? I mean, does this shit wash away buildings? Or can I go up the first four steps of a staircase and just chill?

From the sound of things, this one didn't knock down any buildings and you'd have been okay. For one of the larger, 60 foot high ones, you'd probably be screwed.GrandAdmiralPrawn wrote:How about "GrandAdmiralPrawn's feet, forty inches off the ground, versons tons of moving water, thirty-six inches deep"? Velocity is also a factor. If it's doing 10mph then you're okay, relatively. If it's doing Mach 3, you're royally fucked.GrandAdmiralPrawn wrote:How about "GrandAdmiralPrawn's feet, forty inches off the ground, versons tons of moving water, thirty-six inches deep"? As I understand...
As I understand velocity isn't really a factor. If it's 3 feet high.. it's not going to be 10 meters long... I seem to remember them being VERY, VERY long which is what makes them dangerous. I'd say it's almost more of a momentum thing.... this 3 foot sumani can be a mile long, so the water keeps pushing and pushing and pushing, that's how it causes damage. This is what I remember from the Discovery channel at least .
